Mayweather vs Pacquiao – Different Views

It’s been a quiet week on the Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao front. Besides Bob Arum telling us that despite rumors, mostly spread by Golden Boy Promotions, he’s all for a fight between the two Pound 4 Pound kings, we’ve had no news on any advancements in the negotiations.

So we’ll presume we’re where we left off – Arum and Pacquiao claiming that the talks are on, while Oscar De La Hoya has it made the whole subject rather mysterious. The talks are just starting, or maybe not at all. He preferred to take jabs at Arum.

Amir Khan’s fight with Lamont Peterson this weekend in Washington might be the biggest fight of the week and takes hold of most boxing related news, but it still can’t turn the attention entirely away from the most interesting two names in the sport. Amir Khan’s ties to both fighters are also a reason for this.

Amir Khan is trained by Freddie Roach, who is also Manny Pacquiao’s trainer. Khan was also Pacquiao’s sparring partner until he beat Zab Judah. Good and kind voices in the Pacquiao camp told him that pretty soon, when Khan makes his move from Light Welterweight to Welterweight, the two will be on a collision course. The sparring stopped, although the two still train in the same gym when in the United States.

Khan himself spoke this week about the chances of Pacquiao beating Mayweather - I don’t think Manny’s fading – his last fight was tough but that’s boxing for you. As I always say, if you’re going to go in a shower you’re going to get wet, if you’re going to go in a boxing ring you’re going to get hit. Predicting the outcome of that fight is too hard to call, but everyone wants to see it and I hope it happens.

According to David Haye, not exactly the most respected voice in British or world boxing since his disappointing fight against Wladimir Klitschko for the Heavyweight title, leading to his retirement until recently news of a possible fight with Vitali surfaced, Amir Khan is the only fighter who can beat Floyd.

The only way Khan could be the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world is by beating Mayweather. And I believe the only guy that can beat Mayweather is Khan. He’s young and fresh so, if anyone has the physical tools, it’s him.

The man with the most confidence regarding Manny’s ability to beat Mayweather is Freddie Roach. Busy with Khan? Yes, but there’s always time to promote the Pacquiao – Mayweather business on the side, just so it doesn’t fade away from media’s eye.

Roach began with praises for the potential rival - I will bring in a whole new crew of sparring partners, guys that can imitate Floyd well. There isn’t a lot of guys in the world that are like Floyd, so it would be tough to find them. We would prepare for his counter punching ability, and his speed, which is maybe equal to Manny’s, if not better.

And finished, with expected, by revealing he has the formula to beat the undefeated Mayweather - Mayweather also has flaws which can be exploited. I think we can take advantage of those habits. He does have some bad habits that can be exposed

Floyd Mayweather Jr, Amir Khan fight soon…

Promoter Oscar De La Hoya is already to put his budding star Amir Khan in with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in early 2012 depending on how well Amir Khan does against challenger Lamont Peterson on Saturday in Washington, DC. Khan plans on moving up in weight after this fight to seek out bigger fights at welterweight and his goal is to face Floyd Mayweather Jr and be the one that hands him his first loss of his career.

Speaking with the Telegraph.co.uk, De La Hoya said “I’d be happy to put Amir Khan in against Floyd Mayweather Jr next May if the option presents itself. I really do think he’s ready.”

De La Hoya is kind of in a bind here. If he risks putting Khan in with someone good at welterweight like Andre Berto, Victor Ortiz or Mike Jones, Amir Khan could be knocked out. At the very least, he could struggle and look terrible  even in winning. It’s hard to see Amir Khan beating any of those fighters in an impressive manner. If De La Hoya matches aMIR Khan against some of the weaker opposition, aMIR Khan will be overmatched when he faces a Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Amir Khan really hasn’t taken on a younger quality fighter for a while. Amir Khan struggled against Marcos Maidana in winning a decision and then got a weak puncher in Paul McCloskey, who made Khan look really bad with his defensive skills. If a limited fighter like McCloskey can make Khan look bad just try and imagine what Floyd Mayweather Jr. would do to Khan. I doubt that De La Hoya cares about that, because the money a Amir Khan – Floyd Mayweather Jr fight would make for all those involved would more than make up for Khan getting slaughtered by Floyd Mayweather Jr.

I think De La Hoya is going to have to match Khan light when he moves up in weight unless they can convince Floyd Mayweather Jr. to fight him immediately in May. Khan’s chin is too weak to put him in with Berto, Jones or Ortiz and it would be a recipe for destruction.

I personally think De La Hoya should try as hard as he can to convince Floyd Mayweather Jr. to take the Amir Khan fight in early 2012, because if they wait, Amir Khan is probably going to get slaughtered unless they keep matching him against feather-fisted fighters like Peterson and McCloskey.

Unfortunately for De La Hoya and Amir Khan, at welterweight they hit harder and it will be like putting Khan through an obstacle course to match him carefully so that he doesn’t exposed again. Amir Khan doesn’t have the chin to stand in there with the big punchers unless he’s got his wheels working all night and/or a referee that breaks up the action when Amir Khan is getting pummeled.
