DeMarco vs. Broner: The Problem Wins WBC Championship Via TKO
Nov 18th 2012, 04:23

Adrien Broner now owns the WBC lightweight belt after beating Antonio DeMarco via eighth-round TKO.

Broner used a high-activity approach to control DeMarco throughout the fight, eventually winning the fight in the eighth round. He was incredibly accurate in the match's ultimate round, putting the champion down with a series of uppercuts and body shots.

Once DeMarco went down, his corner literally threw in the white flag.

Broner protected his undefeated record with the most important victory of his career. With the loss, DeMarco drops to 28-3-1 and was defeated for the first time since 2010.

The 26-year-old Mexican built up a significant amount of momentum heading into this fight. He took the lightweight title by beating Jorge Linares, then retained it five months later by knocking out Miguel Roman.

DeMarco’s most recent fight was just over two months ago, but the short time in between bouts is certainly not a reason for this loss. He defended his belt for a second time by knocking out John Molina Jr. just 44 seconds into the contest.

But now, the balance of power has shifted and Broner—nicknamed “The Problem”—has emerged as a serious force in the lightweight division.

The 23-year-old has become a popular fighter due to his captivating personality, but had yet to face a fight of DeMarco’s caliber in his previous 24 professional victories (20 by knockout).

This was Broner’s first fight as a lightweight after moving up from super featherweight. However, he put himself on track to move up a class after failing to make weight in his most recent fight.

He was stripped of his WBO super featherweight title for being too heavy, but his fight against Vicente Escobedo still took place and Broner went on to easily defeat his opponent via knockout in five rounds.

Now he has a new belt to make up for the one he lost in July, and his career is certainly on the rise. After this impressive victory, the future is extremely bright for Broner

Adrien Broner and Johnathan Banks Score Spectacular Wins in Atlantic City
Nov 18th 2012, 05:01

Adrien Broner cemented his standing as one of the top young fighters in all of boxing Saturday night in Atlantic City, systematically breaking down lightweight champion Antonio DeMarco en route to an eighth-round TKO victory.

It was a coming-out party for the Cincinnati native, who was simply too quick, too strong and too powerful for the former champion. With the win, Broner earned himself the WBC lightweight championship, the second title of his career.

This was a good ol' fashioned beat-down. Both fighters started out the fight slowly, loading up with big shots but rarely putting together any combinations. As the rounds went on Broner became more active, content to fight on the inside, where he was able to shred the game, but outclassed, DeMarco with sharp punches.

The fight really began to get out of hand starting in the fifth round, where DeMarco ate a frightful number of big shots. Even without a knockdown you could easily make an argument for it being a 10-8 round. After the round DeMarco's corner was already talking of stopping the fight. Their fighter was clearly too brave for his own good, and taking a frightful amount of punishment.

The end came, mercifully, in the Round 8 when Broner connected with a huge left uppercut that floored DeMarco, prompted DeMarco's corner to literally wave a white flag of surrender and stopping the bout.

Speaking with HBO's Larry Merchant after the fight, Broner was his usual confident self.

"I knew coming into this fight he was gonna come to fight. He's a world-class fighter," Broner said. "Coming into this fight I knew he wouldn't have the skills and the will to beat me."

With the win the sky is the limit for the sometimes brash, but always entertaining, Broner—a fact with which he is well aware.

"To be honest, no disrespect Larry, I wanted to make a statement that anybody that fight Adrien Broner and sign that contract has stepped in some doo-doo they can’t get off the shoe."

While Broner took care of business in the main event, there was one major upset on the undercard.

Johnathan Banks, channeling the spirit of his mentor, the late great Emanuel Steward, turned in the performance of his career by dropping heavily favored Seth Mitchell three times in the second round en route to a TKO victory.

Banks (29-1-1 19 KO) was a massive underdog who few, if any, gave a chance to win against Mitchell, who was considered the next great American heavyweight hope.

Mitchell started out the fight strong, hurting Banks to the body in the opening round. It appeared that Banks was going to have to do something dramatic to keep the bigger and obviously stronger fighter off of him.

And boy did he accomplish that mission. In the ring with HBO’s Larry Merchant after the fight, Banks was effusive in his praise for the man who helped get him here.

“The role of Emanuel Steward played was in my life and fighting is my life. And I want to dedicate this to him. I dedicate this to Emanuel Steward, never forgotten and we’re going to miss him.”

Banks, who has recently made news for his training ability and not his boxing, spoke like a trainer in analyzing the knockout.

“Honestly I didn’t see any openings. But I felt when I hit him I hurt him and he didn’t grab hold like he should have.”

In a dose of irony, Banks could well end up facing the fighter whom he has spent a career sparring (and recently training) with, heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko.

When asked in the ring by Merchant if he knew how to fight Wladimir, Banks responded matter of factly.

“Yes I do. I made a living of knowing how to fight him.”

For Seth Mitchell (25-1-1 19 KO) it is back to the drawing board after an absolutely stunning defeat.

“He caught me. I definitely felt I won the first round. Caught him with some shots he felt. He did what he was supposed to do and caught me with a shot,” Mitchell said.

Saturday night was supposed to be the coming-out party for the next big American heavyweight. Perhaps it was and we were just wrong about which one.

Marquez vs. Viloria: Hawaiian Punch Claims WBA Flyweight Title Via TKO
Nov 18th 2012, 05:10

Brian Viloria claimed the WBA flyweight title on Saturday night in Los Angeles as he beat Hernan “Tyson” Marquez via TKO in the 10th round.

Viloria controlled almost the entire fight, knocking Marquez down and forcing him to fight at his pace. He used a flurry of combinations to end the fight in the 10th round and claim the WBA title.

Saturday night's win adds to Viloria's WBO title, unifying the flyweight belts.

This flyweight showdown featured two of the top fighters in the weight class, but Viloria—nicknamed the Hawaiian Punch—was too much for Marquez.

The 24-year-old Mexican is one of the most talented and successful flyweight fighters, and that allowed him to climb to the top of Ring TV’s rankings for the division.

Marquez’s inability to take down Viloria drops his record to 34-3-0, with 25 of his victories coming via knockout.

Despite Marquez’s spot atop many pundit’s rankings, this was not that large of an upset, as Ring TV pegged Viloria as the No. 2 flyweight fighter. He has now given the boxing outlet a clear reason to readjust its view of this division.

The 31-year-old Hawaii native is now 32-3-0 throughout his career, and this will go down as a signature victory. Viloria has extended his winning streak to six while stopping Marquez’s at seven.

This was a treat for boxing fans, as it is a rare occurrence that two stars take each other on. Viloria and Marquez are the two best flyweights around and are both near the peaks of their respective careers.

Boxing as a sport has been criticized in the past for not being able to put the best talent in the ring together, but there can be no ill feeling from fans after this matchup. A fantastic matchup led to an entertaining fight, and Viloria’s victory will be one of the most memorable moments of his career.

Bleacher Report - Boxing: Manny Pacquiao Should Retire After Fourth Bout with Marquez

Manny Pacquiao Should Retire After Fourth Bout with Marquez
Nov 18th 2012, 01:29

On December 8, Manny Pacquiao will take on Juan Manuel Marquez for the fourth time in his career.

Think about that, the fourth time in his career.

The two legendary boxers have a rich history against each other. Their trilogy has featured three battles that wowed fans, however, Marquez is 0-2-1 in these three fights.

The fourth fight should be wildly entertaining.

Although Pacquiao has managed to either come out on top or fight to a draw in each of the first three contests, it's been close every time.

Considering the personal rivalry that's built up between these two, there's no doubt that this will be a good one. However, it should be the last time we see Pacquiao in the ring.

The fact that Pacquiao is taking on Marquez once again illustrates the primary issue with the state of Pacquiao's career.

At 33 years old, Pacquiao doesn't have much time left. He has 60 fights under his belt right now and as good as he is, time catches up with nearly every boxer.

With so few fights left for Pacquiao, he's left fighting someone for the fourth time in a non-title bout. Someone that he has already beaten twice. At this point in his career, he should be taking fights that enhance his legacy, not just entertain the masses.

Speaking of legacies, Pacquiao already has a resume that rivals any fighter in his generation.

He's the first boxer to win a world championship in eight different weight divisions,  has won ten overall championships and has won nearly every accolade given to boxer's in his storied career.

What else does he have to prove?

Boxing fans will be quick to point out that a rematch with Tim Bradley should be on the horizon. Pacquiao and his corner don't seem interested in a rematch and honestly, why should they?

Pacquiao feels as though he won the fight and there are several fans and analysts who would agree with that sentiment.

The only real fight that could enhance the legacy of Pacquaio would be a super fight with Floyd Mayweather.

As much as fans would love to see it, we've been waiting on that for years and it doesn't appear as if it will ever happen.

In the end, boxing is a dangerous sport. The cumulative damage that one sustains throughout their career can have long-lasting effects.

Pacquaio is a talented man with interests and talents outside the ring, including a political career in his native Philippines.

Considering all that he's achieved in the ring, the time is now for him to walk away from the sport.

Bleacher Report - Boxing: Froch vs. Mack: The Cobra Retains IBF Super-Middleweight Title

Froch vs. Mack: The Cobra Retains IBF Super-Middleweight Title
Nov 18th 2012, 01:20

Yusaf Mack boasted that he would out-slick Carl Froch the way Andre Ward did, but reality made a liar out of him.

He was unsuccessful in his attempts to solve the Cobra.  Froch improved to 30-2, handing Mack his fifth defeat as a professional.

Using a lethal right-left combination into Mack's ribs in the third round, Froch scored an emphatic knockout win.

The British champion prevailed in his homeland and retained his IBF super middleweight title in the process.

Mack was fighting an uphill battle from the very beginning by traveling to Nottingham to face the champion.

Froch was too much for the Philadelphian and has now placed himself in line for a major payday.

He could always  chase a rematch with Andre Ward to avenge his loss in December of 2011. A prideful fighter like Froch has to be interested in settling the score with Ward.

After Ward's dominating defeat of Chad Dawson, he's one of the hottest names in the sport. If Froch is to be mentioned in the same breath, he needs to even the score with him.

Another possible high profile bout could come in a rematch with Lucian Bute.

Froch stopped Bute in May to win the IBF title, but Bute is on the comeback trail.

This would be a step back for Froch, in my opinion. At 35 years old, he needs to take fights that elevate his career. Beating a man he's already defeated should rank fairly low on his list of priorities.

Winning definitely creates options and that is what Froch now has.

We'll see what direction he chooses to move in next, but after another winning performance, he's creeping up on the pound-for-pound lists.

Froch setting the stage for Ward rematch?

NOTTINGHAM, England -- With Ricky Hatton's eligibility one week away from definition, Amir Khan exposed and David Haye bizarrely locked in an Australian jungle for a reality TV show -- the U.K.'s true pound-for-pound No. 1 reafirrmed his foothold on Saturday night and made a huge statement toward his intentions for 2013. It has been precisely 12 months since Carl Froch lost the Super Six Tournament finale to Andre Ward, but again he fed the growing momentum reafirrming his position as the leading challenger to the 168-pound linchpin's reign at the top.
