Amir Khan: "The King" Is Back and He's Now a Completely Different Fighter
Dec 16th 2012, 06:34

Wow! I'm guessing that Amir "King" Khan must have been listening to the critics and naysayers that kept saying he was one loss away from ending his career.

Just moments ago, Khan took out his frustrations on the face of Carlos Molina and got a tenth-round knockout victory.

After the loss to Danny Garcia, Khan fired famed trainer Freddie Roach. He would replace him with Virgil Hunter. Hunter is also the trainer of undefeated super middleweight champion Andre Ward. It seems that Khan has made the right choice as that decision paid off tonight.

In the past, Khan was notorious for going against the wisdom of Freddie Roach and letting his punches go wild. That approach to fighting had worked until the loss to Danny Garcia. After tonight's fight, Khan stated that Hunter has made him a more patient fighter.

I definitely saw a change in Khan's style tonight. Carlos Molina came into this fight looking to take advantage of the doubt surrounding Khan's career.

Khan, however, came into this bout with a renewed focus and a greater sense of urgency.

Molina was the home crowd favorite at the Los Angeles Sports Arena, but that did not phase Khan whatsoever. Khan dominated from start to finish. His jab was the driving force behind tonight's big win.

Molina tried to fight back but he was simply outpunched, outmatched and overpowered.

After the fourth round, Molina's trainer had threatened to stop the fight if he didn't battle back. At first it seemed like he was trying to motivate the No. 6-ranked fighter. But the threats persisted for the duration of the contest.

Not helping matters was the fact that Molina's face received numerous bruises and cuts as the fight continued. Khan had already caused a small cut over Molina's eye after the first round.

Finally after the tenth round, Molina's corner made good on their threat. The fight was stopped and Khan was awarded the knockout victory, the tenth KO of his career.

In breaking his two-fight losing streak, Khan was also awarded the WBC Sliver Light Welterweight championship.

Danny Garcia was in attendance and Khan called him out during his postfight interview. Khan said that he would rematch Garcia anytime, anywhere. But he will have to wait on any such fight as Garcia first mus deal with Zab Judah in February.

For the moment, Khan will celebrate this victory and then decide what his next step will be.

The ball is completely in his court now, and all options are on the table for the British fighter.

My guess is Khan's next fight won't be until the spring of 2013. But after his performance tonight, I look forward to seeing how he performs in his next bout.

Khan returns better, though still flawed
Dec 16th 2012, 05:42

There were times in the early rounds of Amir Khan's rebound bout against Carlos Molina, as Khan lingered too long in the pocket after throwing a combination and Molina cracked him with a left hook, that a few bars from "The Wizard of Oz" filtered into a ringside writer's head. "Tee-tum-tee-tum-tee-TUM-tum, tee-tum-tee-tum-tee-TUM-tum. If I only had a punch." But Carlos Molina does not have a punch, or at least not an especially hard one, and that was perhaps the single biggest reason why he was in the ring with Britain's Khan in front of a crowd of 6,109 at the Los Angeles Sports Arena.

Amir Khan was bigger, quicker and altogether much better than Carlos Molina for every minute of their 10 rounds together, which ended with Molina bleeding too much to continue.

Marcus Browne goes to 2-0
Dec 16th 2012, 05:12

Marcus Browne, the boxing pride of Staten Island, N.Y., went to 2-0 with a TKO win over Ritchie Cherry at the L.A. Sports Arena on Saturday. Browne, 22, scored three knockdowns against his foe from Oklahoma. Browne (2-0, 2 KOs) spoke to Brian Kenny of Showtime after the network finished airing an undercard fight ahead of its Amir Kahn-Carlos Molina main event. Browne promised to "stay on the straight and narrow," and the 2012 Olympian said he likes the pro game, where he can bang and not worry about the headgear and the computer scoring in the amateurs.

Bleacher Report - Boxing: Amir Khan Defeats Carlos Molina Via Knockout

Amir Khan Defeats Carlos Molina Via Knockout
Dec 16th 2012, 06:03

Amir Khan has finally found the win column again. After losing his last two fights, the British boxer defeated the previously undefeated Carlos Molina on Saturday night.

As ESPN Boxing indicates, Molina's corner ended the fight after the 10th round:

Molina's corner stops the fight after Round 10. They have seen enough. A very strong performance from Khan who snapped his losing streak.

— ESPN Boxing (@ESPNBoxing) December 16, 2012

In boxing, a two-fight losing streak is the equivalent of a 10-game skid in most sports, so Khan desperately needed a win in this bout. He was able to rebound from a controversial loss to Lamont Peterson, and a devastating KO at the hands of Danny Garcia.

Peterson failed a drug test for the rematch, per ESPN, which of course brings about some doubt about how level the playing field was for their first matchup. Khan was dominating the Garcia bout before he was caught with a vicious left hook that sent him reeling.

There would be no such setbacks this time, though. Khan dominated nearly every second of all 10 rounds. Molina's corner made the wise decision not to send their man out for the 11th.

The speed and overall skill advantage was too much for Molina to overcome.

Khan improved to 27-3 and Molina's record dropped to 17-1. Khan enjoyed a four-inch height advantage over Molina, and a sizable edge in experience.

Though Molina is one year older than Khan, this was only his 19th professional fight. Khan reached the 30-fight plateau with this outing. He may need another bout to firmly place himself back in the conversation with the world's best 140 and 147-pounders, but he's back on the right track.

The victory had to be extra sweet for Khan as Molina had brought in Danny Garcia's father, Angel Garcia to train him. Khan and the elder Garcia are not the best of friends. Khan admitted the antagonistic elder Garcia got under his skin before his loss to his son.

He had made racist comments during the pre-fight press conference and build-up, per the Guardian and Khan told the Daily Mail, it made him press for the KO too quickly.

Khan now seeks to clean-up the 140-pound scene before possibly moving up to welterweight. That is likely to include a rematch with Garcia somewhere down the line.

If and when that happens, we'll see if Khan can best Angel Garcia's No. 1 fighter the second time around.

Bleacher Report - Boxing: Nonito Donaire KO's Jorge Arce in 3 Rounds Solidfying Fighter of the Year?

Nonito Donaire KO's Jorge Arce in 3 Rounds Solidfying Fighter of the Year?
Dec 16th 2012, 04:30

Top pound-for-pound Filipino-American star Nonito Donaire just may have solidified his Fighter of the Year award for 2012 by knocking out the Mexican veteran star Jorge Arce at the end of the third round in Houston, Texas at the Toyota Center.

Donaire patiently waited and countered Arce for much of the fight.

Arce was overly cautious in the first round, backing up and not willing to trade shots with the WBO super bantamweight champion, who knocked him down once in the second round and twice in the third round.

It was clear that the majority of the fight fans and media were right calling this fight an easy one-sided beatdown for the 30-year-old Donaire, who is very much still in his prime in comparison to the 33-year-old Mexican veteran who has made a career of punishing himself through many exciting bloody wars.

Donaire looked dominant and sharp and fought a near-perfect fight.

Of course, this fight between Donaire vs. Arce would have been a lot better had they fought years earlier.

I remember all the way back in 2008 walking out of the Manny Pacquiao vs. David Diaz fight with Nonito and his wife Rachel, and back then I felt Nonito was not getting the love and recognition he should be getting having knocked out Vic Darchinyan and a number of impressive dominating wins back to back.

All three of us were walking in the lobby of the Mandalay Bay and most of the Filipino fans were not even noticing Nonito.

But then we bumped into Jorge Arce and his wife.

Nonito asked Jorge for his phone number and if I could take a picture of them together.

Then some fans noticed this and began to ask both Nonito and Arce for their pictures and autographs.

I told Rachel that Nonito needs to fight this guy cause he is the big-money fight at your guy's weight class that will make you the most money and turn him into a big star overnight.

Jorge's wife heard me say this and began to laugh, and I felt bad because I assumed she could not either understand English or hear us talking, but she did.

Jorge's wife is rather lovely and took what I said as a compliment.

Fast forward to Saturday night four years later, and four weight classes higher these two warriors finally met inside the ring giving Nonito his career-high pay day of $1 million and Arce a good retirement check of $800,000.

You can not take anything away from Nonito; he is just that good that he makes most of his opponents go into survival mode, but perhaps his true challenges will be at 126 lbs or even 130 lbs?

The HBO commentating team praised Nonito for being one of the only fighters to take a big stand against performance-enhancement drugs in boxing by doing 365-days-a-year-random drug testing in a sport that has often been tainted by PEDs.

The way the commentators praised Nonito as soon as he knocked out Arce for doing random drug testing year round was almost like they were calling out Juan Manuel Marquez for his huge knockout of the year victory over Manny Pacquiao last weekend.

Arce and Marquez both use the same strength and conditioning coach who transformed the 39-year-old Marquez into an impressive body builder, and despite much speculation, Marquez confidently passed his post-fight drug tests that some may argue are not as extensive as the tests that Nonito partakes in.

Speaking of HBO commentators, the boxing Hall of Fame commentator, Larry Merchant will now retire from calling the fights after 35 years, and Donaire vs. Arce was his final fight.

The way Arce looked Saturday night inside the ring, it might not be such a bad idea for him to retire as well like Larry, but with a big paycheck and a beautiful wife that he has waiting for him like a true champion should have.

An Objective Grading of Floyd Mayweather's Fight Selections
Dec 16th 2012, 01:30

With the snores of an unconscious Manny Pacquiao emanating from the canvas, one could hear the pound-for-pound debate silenced.

Floyd "Money" Mayweather is now the undisputed king of boxing.

While Andre Ward, the Klitschko brothers and Nonito Donaire fill in the spots behind him, the distance is vast. Money rules. His critics lament the path he has taken, suggesting it has been the easiest route possible.

Do their jeers have merit?

Mayweather's last fight was an impressive win over Miguel Cotto. Cotto was the toughest non-Pacquiao challenger at the time, and as such (being the most recent), this list will exclude that fight.

Bleacher Report - Boxing: Nonito Donaire Defeats Jorge Arce Via 3rd-Round Knockout

Nonito Donaire Defeats Jorge Arce Via 3rd-Round Knockout
Dec 16th 2012, 03:57

Nonito Donaire retained his WBO super bantamweight championship with a dominant third-round knockout over challenger Jorge Arce Saturday night at the Toyota Center in Houston.

The two fighters felt each other out for the first round, but the pace quickened in Round 2. Donaire began to throw more combinations and caught Arce to score his first knockdown of the fight.

The third round was even more impressive for Donaire. He scored an early knockdown over Arce, and, like Arce always does, the challenger kept pushing forward, trying to land punches of his own.

In the third round's final seconds, though, Donaire dropped Arce. It was obvious right away that the fight was over as Arce struggled to peel himself off the mat.

Not only was this a great fight, but it was the final fight that HBO legend Larry Merchant will commentate from ringside. He gave viewers a few of his textbook comments, leaving you scratching your head while trying to figure out what he just said.

Arce entered this fight behind a 68-6-2 record with 46 knockouts in his career. He's notorious for his straight-forward approach, using his toughness to battle his way through fights. Even though he doesn't play great defense or display an all-around skill set, he's still one of the sport's most entertaining competitors.

Donaire was 30-1 with 19 knockouts entering Saturday's bout. Coming into the fight, it wasn't hard to guess that he would use his complete skill set to try to push Arce around the ring. The only real advantage that Arce had coming into it was his tremendous heart.

Arce fought the fight that many expected, and he lost the only way that he possibly could have. He doesn't ever back down, but Donaire was too good.

Once again, Donaire proved himself to be a great fighter and someone who steps up when the title is on the line. It will be interesting to see whom he fights next, with the most likely candidates being Abner Mares or Guillermo Rigondeaux

Amir Khan vs. Carlos Molina Results: Live Round by Round Analysis and Reactions
Dec 16th 2012, 04:12

It wasn't long ago that Amir Khan (26-3, 18 KO) was considered one of the sport's fastest rising stars.

Two stunning defeats, and a new trainer later, he is now fighting just to save his career.

Khan steps into the ring tonight against the relatively unknown, but undefeated, Carlos Molina (17-0-1, 7 KO).

A win for Khan would put his career back on track, but a loss could mean the end of the road. Either way it promises high drama from the Coliseum in Los Angeles.

The big fight is up next!

It's already been an eventful day/night in Los Angeles as Leo Santa Cruz successfully defended his IBF bantamweight title on CBS with a tough unanimous decision win over a game Alberto Guevara.

Also in junior middleweight action Alfredo "Perro" Angulo continued his comeback with a hard-fought unanimous decision victory over unheralded but tough as nails Jorge Silva.

In the final co-feature bout American heavyweight knockout artist Deontay Wilder (26-0, 26 KO's) scored an absolutely spectacular knockout of Kelvin Price in the third round to continue his rise in the heavyweight division.

Stay tuned to Bleacher Report for live round-by-round analysis, reactions and opinions of the big fight!

By Mark Calooke: To look at unbeaten heavyweight prospect Deontay Wilder's record the average fan would be impressed. Unbeaten after 25 fights and all coming by stoppage.
