Khan beats Diaz & Martinez decisions Murray in unpopular decisions
Apr 28th 2013, 04:34

A lot has been said over the years about home decisions and that was yet again the case tonight, one in Sheffield, England and the other in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Both of the fights were competitive and top class boxing was on display but surely it’s time that these dodgy decisions have to be cut from [...]

Garcia too strong for Judah in BK
Apr 28th 2013, 04:09

Danny Garcia and Zab Judah were in each others' faces leading up to their Saturday clash at Barclays Center, to the extent that they were kept separate for the weigh in Friday. They sorted it out in the ring in Brooklyn, and the fighter from Philly backed up the bravado slung by his dad and trainer, Angel, all week, with a sharp right hand which tagged the Brooklyn-born Judah hard and often. Zab was buzzed badly in the sixth and went down in eighth.

Danny Jacobs gets TKO at Barclays
Apr 28th 2013, 04:07

Danny Jacobs looked sharp in taking out Keenan Collins in round four at Barclays Center Saturday night. The Brownsville-born middleweight was putting combos together from the start on Collins, a Pennsylvania fighter. Now living in Park Slope, Jacobs weighed in after his TKO victory, which raised him to 25-1. "I was definitely more aggressive and in better shape than he was," said the 26-year-old fighting for Golden Boy Promotions. "I wanted to test him.

Danny Garcia Defeats Zab Judah by Unanimous Decision
Apr 28th 2013, 03:45

Danny Garcia won a thrilling unanimous decision over Zab Judah at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Saturday night. The official judges scored the fight 115-112, 114-112 and 116-111, per BoxRec.com.

Garcia dominated the middle rounds, continuing to show why he deserves more credit than he receives as one of the sport's best.

The champion dazed Judah on two occasions and floored him in the eighth. But this was a case of two different fights in one, to a degree.

Judah seemed to hurt Garcia in the 10th and 11th round and controlled the late action. The result suggests a rematch may be in order. The bad blood sold the first fight, but the action would sell the rematch.

Throughout the pre-fight hype, Judah and the Garcia camp engaged in a war or words and even nearly came to blows on a few occasions (links contain explicit language). Thankfully, all the fighting took place in the ring on Saturday night.

The two camps were civil and respectful after the fight. Even Judah and Garcia's controversial father, Angel Garcia, spoke once the action was done.

Garcia's game plan of varying his attack early befuddled Judah, but ultimately the 35-year-old veteran made some adjustments. Judah's speed and guile began to turn the tables a bit. Garcia's chin, another one of his underrated qualities, was apparent late.

Judah landed some hard shots that would have dropped lesser men.

He was really coming on in the championship rounds, but he simply ran out of time. Had this been an old-school 15-round fight, perhaps the story may have been a little different.

Though Judah didn't officially get the victory in this fight, he did dispel a few of the knocks on him during his career.

Many have called Judah a four-round fighter. Critics have said he quits in the ring. None of those deficiencies were apparent on Saturday night. He could have easily folded in the middle rounds, but he didn't.

Garcia was pounding him with hard shots. Judah stumbled around the ring almost like he did when he was stopped by Kostya Tszyu in 2001. But he showed resolve that deserves recognition.

Garcia is now set to face the winner of the Lamont Peterson vs. Lucas Matthysse bout on May 18. When asked during the Showtime telecast who he thought would win that bout, Garcia said Peterson.

Perhaps the bulletin-board material has already begun for that one. That would indeed be a great fight, but I'm not sure it would be more entertaining than seeing these two clash again.

Bleacher Report - Boxing: Sergio Martinez Defeats Martin Murray Via Unanimous Decision

Sergio Martinez Defeats Martin Murray Via Unanimous Decision
Apr 28th 2013, 02:15

Sergio Martinez escaped with a unanimous decision victory over Martin Murray on Saturday night in Buenos Aires, Argentina. But it wasn't easy.

Martinez defended his WBC middleweight title for the first time and moved to 51-2. All three judges scored the fight, 115-112, for the champion.

Murray made the night very tense for Martinez and his camp. The movement and elusiveness, that has been a major key for Martinez in previous fights, wasn't as effective as it has been in the past.

The challenger even dropped him in the eighth round with a left hook.

Though Murray's pressure and hard straight right hands found their mark with good regularity in the middle rounds, Martinez did enough to eek out a decision.

Discussing open scoring in Boxing, ESPN Boxing's official Twitter account gave fans on social media a clue of what to expect.

Martinez was noticeably fresher late and he out-boxed Murray in the 11th and 12th round. I had the champion winning, but he needed the final two rounds to pull out the win in my eyes.

I scored the fight 114-113.

Though Martinez got the unanimous decision, the night did not end without controversy. He seemed to lose his balance after a punch in the 10th round, and he went to the canvas.

It looked like it should have been a knockdown, but it was called a slip. That of course denied Murray another automatic 10-8 round.

On the official scorecards, it wouldn't have changed the outcome. On my scorecard, it would have made the fight a draw.

This was the first time Martinez had fought in front of his hometown fans in 11 years. I'm sure he would have liked to put on a more dazzling performance.

After Saturday night, I'm not sure how many more impressive showings Martinez has left in him. The difficulty in this fight was as much about Martinez's decline as it was Murray's performance.

Because he's 38 years old, Maravilla fans better appreciate him while they can. Though victorious, it appears the end is near for him.

Bleacher Report - Boxing: Amir Khan's Next Victory Must Be More Convincing to Regain Elite Status

Amir Khan's Next Victory Must Be More Convincing to Regain Elite Status
Apr 28th 2013, 02:18

Amir Khan may have picked up the win in his latest bout against Julio Diaz, but it wasn't all that impressive.

Khan entered the fight on Saturday as the prohibitive favorite. He was fighting in front of a hometown crowd, and Diaz is just not the caliber of opponent who should give Khan trouble. Despite all of that, Khan was knocked down in the fourth round and in serious trouble on multiple occasions.

Khan was ultimately able to outpoint Diaz for most of the bout and pick up a narrow win on the scorecards, but Diaz had his opportunities to win the fight.

For a man who once held the WBA Light Welterweight Championship for two solid years, that's a disappointing performance.

Before losing back-to-back fights against Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia, Khan was one of the top 140-pound fighters in the world. After those two losses, Khan began a path to redemption that includes a 10th-round TKO victory over Carlos Molina and now his decision win over Julio Diaz.

If he continues to fight like he did against Diaz and get caught against inferior opponents, he will find it difficult to recapture the elite status he once held.

Khan is in a division that is filled with burgeoning fighters who are capable of beating him because of his lack of defense and questionable chin.

Climbing to the top of the ladder again will not be easy. Danny Garcia and Lamont Peterson still remain top fighters in the division, and they have already shown they are better than Khan.

Lucas Matthysse has established himself as a force to be reckoned with in the division as well. He has more than enough power to capitalize on the opportunities that Diaz wasn't able to seize.

Had Khan dominated Diaz as expected, it would have been a logical next step for Khan to take on some of the bigger names in the division. With his lackluster performance against Diaz, it's now clear that he must take another tune-up fight before attempting to face the best in the division.

If he doesn't tighten up his defensive skills, he may have already passed his prime at just 26 years old.
