C.J. Ross' Baffling Draw Scorecard in Mayweather-Canelo Is Impossible to Defend
Sep 15th 2013, 06:04, by Richard Langford

Floyd Mayweather dominated Saul "Canelo" Alvarez on Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, and he did so in such a fashion that left no doubt who the winner would be when the verdict came in from the judges.

As the fight concluded, there were plenty of people who felt similar to Sports Illustrated's Chris Mannix

However, doubt came rushing in after the first score was announced as a 114 draw. Gasps and even laughs flew from the spectators in the arena and, I'm sure, in living rooms all across the country.

Was boxing, a sport which is no stranger to "controversial" endings, about to see one of the biggest scoring atrocities ever?

Thankfully, the other judges apparently were actually watching the fight.

The draw scorecard belonged to C.J. Ross, and if that name sounds familiar, it would be because this is not her first time in the spotlight from another questionable decision:

As you might expect, given the above tweet, Mannix was baffled and calling for her job after the Ross' draw was announced:

Obviously, there is going to be plenty of speculation that Ross is dirty—that she is on the take and making a mockery of boxing in the process.

Maybe she just needs some laser eye surgery. I have no idea.

What I do know is that she will not be able to defend this decision no matter what her motives are.

At least in the Bradley-Pacquiao fight she wasn't on an island. Another judge agreed with her that Bradley won, and all three had it within two points.

However, that is not the case with this fight.

Ross is on an island with this score, and she will have a hard time finding even the staunchest Canelo supporter populating that little piece of land.

Danny Garcia vs. Lucas Matthysse: Winner, Round-by-Round Analysis and Recap
Sep 15th 2013, 04:22, by Brian Mazique

WBA and WBC light welterweight champion Danny "Swift" Garcia (27-0) proved again that he is more than worthy of his championship status. Many—including me—thought that Lucas "The Machine" Matthysse (34-3) would stop the champion and take his title.

Garcia would have none of it.

In a thrilling bout, Garcia out-boxed the slugging Matthysse to earn a unanimous decision win on Saturday at MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Per BoxRec, the judges scored the fight as followed:

Robert Hoyle 114-112, Glenn Trowbridge 115-111, Juergen Langos 114-112

Though Matthysse had his moments, the decision was never really in doubt. Here's my scorecard and analysis for each round. The fighter's name that I tabbed of the winner in each round appears in the sub-headline.

Round 1 - Garcia

The intensity from the opening moments made the first round of this bout better than the entire fight that preceded. Ishe Smith and Carlos Molina’s bout was a snoozefest, but this one began with a big-fight feel.

In a cautiously fought round, Garcia was able to control the opening frame with his jab.

My Score - Garcia 10, Matthysse 9

Round 2 - Matthysse

The Machine walked Garcia down in the second round. He landed the more telling blows including a sound right hand. This was one of Matthysse’s few early bright spots. The fight was still up for grabs at this point.

My Score - Garcia 19, Matthysse 19

Round 3 - Garcia

The champion’s boxing skills allowed him to evade Matthysse’s power shots. Garcia’s confidence began to shine through in his movements. He even took a few shots early, but he didn’t fold. This is the point Garcia began to build momentum.

My Score - Garcia 29, Matthysse 28

Round 4 - Garcia

Body work and heart was shining through from Garcia in the fourth round. After Matthysse landed a hard right hand early, Garcia began to counter with hard body shots that slowed the challenger. This was another round for Garcia.

My Score - Garcia 39, Matthysse 37

Round 5 - Garcia

With the clear and present danger of Mathysse’s power still looming, Garcia began to make the fight look easy. His jab and counter combos were ruling the day to this point.

My Score - Garcia 49, Matthysse 46

Round 6 - Matthysse

After landing power shots with some regularity in the round, Matthysse and his corner should have had a confidence boost. Garcia appeared to slow down, and Matthysse was able to control the action.

My Score - Garcia 58, Matthysse 56

Round 7 - Garcia

Matthysse’s momentum was stopped by a combination of solid body work and a badly swollen right eye. Garcia landed a powerful combination toward the end of the round that Matthysse may not have seen because of the swelling. At this point, Matthysse needs something big to have a chance. The swelling was the biggest momentum shifter in the fight.

My Score - Garcia 68, Matthysse 65

Round 8 - Garcia

Swift was simply picking Matthysse apart in this round. The champion out-boxed the slower, one-eyed challenger throughout the round. At one point, it seemed logical for Matthysse's corner to consider stopping the fight because their fighter appeared to have vision issues.

My Score - Garcia 78, Matthysse 74

Round 9 - Garcia

In what amounted to a round off for Garcia, the champion still did enough to remain in control of the round and the fight. He had a huge lead at this point and was pouring it on.

My Score - Garcia 88, Matthysse 83

Round 10 - Matthysse

Just when it looked as if The Machine was done, he came through with a solid round. He landed a few hard shots on Garcia and chased the champion all over the ring to earn the round.

My Score - Garcia 97, Matthysse 93

Round 11 - Garcia

Matthysse began the round landing more power shots. One hard right hand early in the round knocked the mouthpiece from the champion’s mouth. With a champion’s heart, Garcia responded by knocking Matthysse down in the latter stages of the round. It wasn’t a devastating punch that put the challenger down, but it was legitimate. For all intent and purpose, this ended the suspense.

My Score - Garcia 107, Mathysse 101

Round 12 - Even

Garcia asserted himself when he needed to in the final round. He was penalized for a low blow. The infraction cost him a point, but that simply made the round even on my card.

My Score - Garcia 116, Mathysse 110

Conclusion

There isn't much else to say about Garcia at this point. He deserves to take on the winner of the Floyd Mayweather-Canelo Alvarez bout and a higher spot on everyone's pound-for-pound list.

This was a huge win over a tough opponent.

Danny Garcia Next Fight: What's Next for Fighter After Win over Lucas Matthysse
Sep 15th 2013, 04:25, by Tyler Brooke

Danny Garcia was able to hold on to his title belt after a unanimous decision win over Lucas Matthysse Saturday night in Las Vegas, but now Garcia has to look ahead at the next fight.

It was certainly an incredible fight to watch.  At the beginning, it was clear that Matthysse was in control of the fight.  Matthysse was landing some nice shots and kept the pace up by continuously throwing big shots.

Garcia finally started to come back, however.  While Matthysse kept looking to take Garcia's head off, Danny was focused on keeping the pace and continuing to fight like a true boxer.

Matthysse kept staying aggressive, but then the seventh round came.

Swelling started to form around Matthysse's right eye, and his vision obviously started to blur.  Garcia's best shot is his left hook, and he was taking advantage of the lack of vision up until the end.  He kept using his left, and Matthysse kept being unable to block them.

Round 11 officially decided it.  Despite Matthysse landing strong shots one after another to start the round, his eye swelling slowed him down, and Garcia went at him.  He was able to knock Matthysse down for the first time in his career, and by then it was over.

Garcia was able to improve to 27-0 on his career, and according to ESPN Stats & Info, it was the fourth title defense by him.

With this win, it's now time for Garcia to look at his next fight, so what are some options?

Zab Judah would be an interesting one.  He's the former undisputed welterweight champion and lost by unanimous decision to Garcia in their previous fight.  According to Dan Rafael of ESPN, there a chance this could happen, although unlikely, saying:

Judah said he couldn't pick a winner but did make one thing clear -- he'd like a rematch with the winner.

"Absolutely," he said. "You know what I'm about. I want the big fights and to fight the best guys. So a rematch is something I'd like to do and I think the fans would like that too."

Perhaps the more interesting option, which was talked about during the broadcast, was a fight between Garcia and Floyd Mayweather.  Mayweather has been the top fighter in the world for a long time, and it would certainly be an excellent opportunity for the undefeated fighter.

For now, Garcia will be sitting back and enjoying the fact that he was able to retain his title.  He's still an undefeated fighter and one of the best boxers in the world, so whoever he fights next will certainly make for an interesting bout.

Justin Bieber, Lil Wayne Escort Floyd Mayweather to Ring for Canelo Alvarez Bout
Sep 15th 2013, 05:00, by Ryan Rudnansky

Floyd Mayweather Jr. decided to reconnect with Justin Bieber and Lil Wayne on Saturday before his fight with Saul "Canelo" Alvarez at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

The undefeated legend was walked to the ring by the famous duo, per Believe Tour Updates:

BelieveTourUpdates™ (@BelieveTUpdates) September 15, 2013

You may remember that Bieber walked Mayweather to the ring for his fight with Miguel Cotto in May of last year. He even got to hold Mayweather's championship belt after the legend's victory via unanimous decision over the Puerto Rican.

Lil Wayne also walked Mayweather to the ring before his fight with Robert Guerrero in May of this year.

In the later stages of his career, Mayweather appears to be growing fond of Bieber and Lil Wayne. Perhaps this will be a theme for the last few fights of his career. Both Bieber and Lil Wayne certainly create plenty of drama alongside Mayweather. Perhaps they were all made for each other.

Mayweather has made a living out of hyping up fights. Granted, he would be making a lot of money without drumming up buzz regardless, but he has certainly made more than he would have if he was a quiet, humble fighter.

Like it or not, the "bad guy" image Mayweather has created for years has only made him more wealthy and famous. He is the perfect blend of talent and excitement. Everything he does—including his appearance with Bieber and Lil Wayne on Saturday—is by design. He's much more intelligent outside of the ring than people give him credit for.
