Austin "No Doubt" Trout scored the biggest win of his boxing career on Saturday night by defeating Miguel Cotto. Until now, Trout was considered a good fighter, but he hadn't captured a signature win, and thus, had not become a household name in the sport.
That all changed on Saturday night. It was Trout's fourth defense of his WBA light-middleweight title, and the win denied Cotto's attempt to claim his fifth world title.
Trout remains undefeated, moving to 26-0 in his career after dispatching the future Hall of Famer. Cotto's record declines to 37-4, and this now makes him a loser in two consecutive fights.
It is unclear what this latest setback will mean for him moving forward, but Trout's future just got a lot brighter. Trout now seems like a possible contender for Saul Alvarez, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and possibly even Sergio Martinez.
Those fights would likely have to happen at middleweight, but it is certainly feasible now.
Cotto is a proud Puerto Rican fighter, but he must ask himself if he's been in a few too many wars. The toll fights with Manny Pacquiao, Antonio Margarito (twice), Shane Mosley and Floyd Mayweather have taken on him seems apparent.
Cotto is just 32 years old, but he's been fighting professionally for 11 years. His style generally puts him in line to expect punishment. After a while, that slows down any fighter.
It's obvious that these two fighters are headed in opposite directions now.
