Adrien "The Problem" Broner showed why he is considered boxing's next big star Saturday night, beating tough Welshman Gavin Rees by TKO in Round 5 to retain his WBC lightweight title.
After a strong start by Rees (37-2-1, 18 KOs), even being scored ahead of Broner (26-0, 22 KOs) on HBO's Harold Leaderman's card, Broner was toying around a too much in the first couple of rounds without much action. Broner then took charge of the fight in Round 3 and never let up.
In the fourth round Broner displayed his impressive knockout power by flooring Rees for just the second time in his career with a vicious uppercut. Rees showed heart and made it out of the round, but his corner almost stopped the bout.
Broner then overwhelmed Rees again in Round 5, although Rees landed his fair amount of shots and eventually caused Rees to take a knee after a huge upper cut to the body. The end of the bout was only matter of time.
Opening up on Rees as he came out of the standing eight-count, Broner caused Rees' corner to throw in the towel, giving Broner the TKO win.
Broner took some good shots with little effect and should send even more of a message to the boxing world that not only can Broner land a power shot, he can take one as well.
With no real big names in the lightweight division, the best thing for Broner to do is to move up to the 140-pound junior welterweight division. The junior welterweight division is full of names that will excite fans and add more lure to Broner's star power.
As Broner entertained on his way to the ring, while in the ring with his superior boxing skills and devastating power and through his cocky, but fitting taunts, "The Problem" should have no problems being one of the biggest stars in boxing for many years to come.
