Robert Guerrero Won't Stand Trial on Gun Charge Until After Mayweather Bout

Boxer Robert Guerrero is in hot water over charges stemming from traveling with a gun at John F. Kennedy Airport in Queens, N.Y., but his May 4 fight against Floyd Mayweather doesn't appear to be in jeopardy.

According to Bryanna Fissori of BoxingInsider.com, the 31-1-1 Guerrero will not face a hearing regarding the charges until May 14. That means his highly anticipated bout against the undefeated Mayweather should go off without a hitch.

Guerrero's charges stem from a March 28 incident at JFK Airport that saw him carry an unloaded gun, which he willingly showed to a Delta agent during a pre-flight check.

Fissori also reports that Guerrero has a valid license to carry the gun as well as the three 15-round bullet magazines that were found along with it in California. Since gun laws are different across each of the 50 states, however, his gun-carrying license means nothing in New York.

It is difficult to say what this means for Guerrero moving forward, but no state has more stringent gun laws than New York. Also, gun safety is a hot-button issue across the country right now, so expect Guerrero's offense to be taken very seriously despite his status as a famous athlete.

Guerrero isn't in good shape on a personal level right now, but the gun charges will not affect him on a professional level, which is great for him, Mayweather and boxing fans everywhere. Guerrero is considered one of Mayweather's toughest tests, but his impending hearing could weigh heavily on his mind come May 4.
