On Saturday, May 18, rising welterweight prospect Dusty Hernandez-Harrison dismantled Eddie Soto over five rounds. The pro-Hernandez-Harrison crowd at the University of the District of Columbia Sports Complex got their money's worth, being treated to a scintillating knockout.
Hernandez-Harrison took in the whole scene and went about his business in impressive fashion, never letting the arena’s chants of “Dusty, Dusty” get to his head.
Hernandez-Harrison dominated the fight from the opening bell, scoring knockdowns in Rounds 2 and Round 5.
The fight started with Soto coming forward and Hernandez-Harrison patiently picking his shots. Soto made the mistake of lunging in early on and was caught with sharp counter punches.
In the second round, Hernandez-Harrison was busier with his jab and began landing at ease. He also began finding a home for the lead right hand and eventually landed a quick combination which stunned and knocked Soto down for the first time in the bout.
As the fight wore on, Hernandez-Harrison broke Soto down with effective combinations and was able to end the fight with a great right hook. Soto hit the canvas hard and although he tried to get up, the ref had seen enough and stopped the action at the 2:48 mark of Round 5.
After the fight, Hernandez-Harrison was in great spirits and joked with Brandon Parker of The Washington Post, saying “Maybe now somebody here (UDC) will know me and I can copy off somebody’s homework”—alluding to the fact that he starts his college career at UDC in June.
With the dominant win, Hernandez-Harrison proved that he is mature enough to handle the bright lights, while at the same time putting on a crowd-pleasing performance.
Hernandez-Harrison earned career win number 15 to push his record to 15-0 with 9 KOs. Soto dropped his seventh consecutive fight, falling to 12-7 with 4 KOs.
