David Haye has been forced to withdraw from the highly-anticipated bout with rising star Tyson Fury due to a cut suffered just over one week before the scheduled fight, The Guardian reports.
An update posted on Haye's official site provided more details about the incident that caused the cut, which required medical attention.
The cut above his left eyebrow occurred in round two of sparring on Friday night (September 19) and required six stitches by a plastic surgeon at St. Thomas' hospital. Because of the gravity of the cut, these stitches will now remain in place for five to seven days.
As of now, the Haye camp is saying the fight is postponed until further notice. Once the veteran boxer is examined further by doctors to determine the amount of damage a clearer picture should emerge as to when the bout might be rescheduled.
Haye was disappointed by the turn of events, as remarks passed along in the report on his official site illustrate.
"Gutted isn't even the word," said a crestfallen Haye. "Mentally, I'm on the floor at the moment. I'm devastated most of all for my loyal fans, my family and my team, as well as Tyson Fury and his team.
"I know injuries and cuts are part and parcel of our sport, but this doesn't change the feeling of disappointment and sadness I'm experiencing right now. To everyone who has bought tickets, booked hotels, and followed this fight since it was announced, there is absolutely nothing I can do except apologise from the very bottom of my heart."
The fight was supposed to feature two fighters from the United Kingdom at opposite ends of the spectrum. One in Haye looking to provide his career with a late boost and another in Fury looking for a major breakthrough.
While it sounds like Haye is still hoping to step in the ring with Fury, there's nothing he can do now but wait for further information. The deep gash right above his eyebrow, as passed along by Eurosport, clearly shows he wouldn't have been ready by next weekend.
Haye rebounded from a loss to Wladimir Klitschko by scoring a knockout of Dereck Chisora last July. He would have served as a major test for the undefeated Fury, who's most recent victory also came by way of knockout against Steve Cunningham in April.
Unfortunately, the pair now won't get to face off next weekend due to Haye's injury.
