Frankie Gavin improved his unbeaten record to 18-0 with a decision win over Bradley Pryce over 10 rounds in their welterweight clash in Leeds.
Gavin showed his class and was clearly the smoother fighter over the course of the fight, establishing his advantage early on and never letting it go.
Pryce was a game competitor, and showed very little sign that Gavin had hurt him during the course of the fight. But he didn't do enough to impress the judge, who awarded it 99-92 to Gavin.
Nonetheless it was an impressive effort from a fighter who had taken the bout on such short notice. Originally Gavin was due to face Joseph Lamptey in a defence of his Commonwealth belt, but he was denied a visa for the bout, as the Daily Star reported.
Thereafter, as Boxing News Online subsequently confirmed, stand-in opponent Juliano Ramos also fell through after he had passport issues.
It meant that Gavin was denied the test he had been planning for, and the 28-year-old may need some sterner tests before he takes the next step up in class.
After the fight Gavin's manager Francis Warren called out Amir Khan as a possible 2014 opponent on Box Nation television in the UK. Khan, a former world champion, has spent 2013 rebuilding his reputation as a serious world title prospect.
Whether Khan would be interested in a domestic fight remains to be seen—he is talking up a possible showdown with Floyd Mayweather Jr.
