With the announcement that 50 Cent and Floyd Mayweather, Jr. are now promoting fights and fighters together, hope for the future of boxing gained some ground as TMT Promotions gained popularity and an impressive roster in a matter of weeks. Many people assume and hope that with a new face in boxing promotion, many must-happen fights will now be made.
So far, both Floyd and 50 Cent made things look easy, but according to one boxing legend, there will always be turbulence in boxing proportions. In a recent interview with Entertainment Sports Radio, BoxingScene has quoted Mike Tyson warning TMT Promotions, stating the following:
I wish 50 Cent the best of luck in the world with the endeavor that he’s doing, but this is something that 50 Cent has to know when you’re dealing with something like boxing and you’re dealing with human beings. We call it peddling the flesh. Even though you’re paying them, you’re still dealing in flesh.
Life in general is very short and unpredictable but its more unpredictable than it is short. So you have to understand that when you’re dealing with human beings, you’re dealing with the probability of anything happening. And you also have to know this about boxing. It’s the only business in the world, the one legalized business, where everything is not always on top of the table. It should be taken over by the government. 50 is a rap star, 50 is an entertainer, 50 is an entrepreneur. He doesn’t really know the ins and outs of boxing. He probably knows what Floyd tells him, but once he gets in the arena, everyone that was ever his friend on the other side is now his enemy. Their job is to decimate him financially and get him out of the business.
This sounds like a very serious and urgent warning. Tyson, thanks to his fame and Don King, has seen it all. It should be clear that he knows all and ins and outs of boxing, and his opinion should matter more than most others.
I assume that both 50 Cent and Mayweather, Jr. will laugh it off and pay little to no attention to it, but that might be a bad decision. Despite the fact that Floyd has been in the game for a very respectable amount of time and has been learning the promotional games himself, there are depths that he has not yet been able to experience.
I don’t want to say it, but will: People like former Don King, Bob Arum, Oscar De La Hoya and a few others are extremely powerful in the sport of boxing and are a driving force behind every decision ever made. They may lay dormant for a long time, but when the time comes, they have certain privileges and power that Mayweather, Jr. is yet to acquire.
It is very interesting that Tyson calls it dealing flesh, as it not only sounds very dramatic, but also, in a way, accurate. People are capable of anything we can imagine them to be, and sometimes, making the wrong move may spell disaster and war. Friends become enemies and enemies start masking as friends, but in the end, money is the leading force behind any and all decisions.
I hope that TMT does well, as they are much-needed in the sport at these times. But it wouldn’t hurt to listen to a man that has been through it all and take extra steps and caution before making any step, small or big.
At this point in time, it's hard to say what will come of TMT, and not because of what they will do or not do, but mainly because it's impossible to tell what the big boys in the sandbox will to do them.
