Geale vs. Barker: Dazzling Defeats Real Deal via Split Decision
Aug 18th 2013, 04:05, by Alex Ballentine

Darren Barker (26-1) became the new IBF middleweight champion on Saturday night by virtue of a split-decision victory over reigning champion Daniel Geale (29-2) in Atlantic City, N.J.

Steve Kim of MaxBoxing tweeted out the scores for a bout that would turn out to be one of the most action-packed of the year.

From the opening bell Geale was looking to defend his championship belt by turning the bout into a slugfest. He threw power punches in bunches early and often; however, it was Barker who displayed a wise approach as he patiently countered the champion with better efficiency that scored.

As ESPN Boxing noted, Barker's approach likely won him the opening frame:

That first round would prove to be a trendsetter for the rest of the early rounds as Geale relied on his pace and Barker answered by being the better technician. As Douglass Fischer of Ring TV noted, Geale was going to have to keep up the pace all night if he wanted to break through:

Geale's pressure finally started to catch up with Barker as the fight progressed to the middle rounds. By the fifth round, the defending champion had seized the momentum, catching Barker with multiple power shots.

Those shots would add up in the sixth as he put Barker on the ropes and scored a knockdown. However, Barker would recover before the referee counted him out and had Geale in trouble by the end of the round.

As Brian Campbell of ESPN noted, the whole encounter was a beautiful mess for fans of the sweet science:

Barker appeared to catch a second wind after the knockdown, though. From the sixth round on he was right back in the thick of things and made his own case for the judges as the fight approached the later rounds.

Carl Froch chimed in with his own encouragement for the challenger:

Through 10 rounds, Barker had claimed a slim lead on ESPN's scorecard thanks to his perseverance:

Geale turned up the pace once again in the closing rounds and was able to hurt Barker in the 12th and final round, but he didn't take advantage as he was content to simply take the round from his opponent. It was a mistake that would cost him dearly as the challenger became the champion with a split decision.

Miura vs. Thompson: Takashi Miura Defeats Yeyo Via Unanimous Decision
Aug 18th 2013, 04:25, by Matt Fitzgerald

Takashi Miura retained his WBC super featherweight title belt on Saturday, defeating upstart challenger Sergio Thompson in a unanimous decision at Plaza de Toros in Cancun, Mexico.

When the dust settled after the highly entertaining bout between the 29-year-old boxers, the three judges scored it at 113-112, 114-110 and 114-111—all in favor of Miura (h/t ESPN Deportes' Salvador Rodriguez).

Yeyo hit the canvas twice, which ultimately prevented him from capturing the championship in Miura's maiden defense.

Although Miura had the slight upper hand throughout the evening, the fight did go the full distance and was by no means a breeze, as CBCSports.ca's Chris Iorfida observed:

David Avila of UppercutMagazine.com reported that after the fight, Miura went to a local hospital and was apparently throwing up blood:

Hopefully Miura has a speedy and full recovery after paying a punishing price for the victory.

Through six rounds, it appeared that Miura would cruise to a victory, but Thompson fought valiantly, even decking Miura at one point with a strong right hook to make things interesting ahead of Round 8.

Thompson is a Mexican native, so the crowd was behind him to spur him on, and even the referee wouldn't allow him to quit when he was visibly fatigued near the end:

Battling against a supremely quick southpaw in Miura proved to be slightly too difficult, though, as the Japanese champion Miura was rock-solid and relentless in his own right. Eventually, Thompson's attempts at defense proved futile as he wore down but never quit.

The loss dropped Thompson to 27-3 for his career, but considering he's won 25 of those prior fights by knockout, it was worth sticking around to see if he could land the proper shot to drop Miura for good.

Meanwhile, the more technically sound, gutsy and methodical Miura boosted his record to 26-2-2 in keeping hold of the belt he won in April over Thompson's compatriot, Gamaliel Diaz.

Deontay Wilder Set to Become Next Great American Heavyweight
Aug 18th 2013, 04:55, by Alex Ballentine

It's been over a decade since the United States of America has produced a bona fide star in boxing's heavyweight division, but Deontay Wilder is well on his way to putting an end to that streak.

Since 2001, when the ultra-popular Evander Holyfield held the WBA Heavyweight Championship belt, there have been just six heavyweight champions from the U.S.

None of them had what it takes to become a true star in the sport. Chris Byrd, as slick and quick as he was, never possessed the impressive power of the most popular champions. John Ruiz was more likely to cure someone's insomnia than generate any real buzz.

Champions like Hasim Rahman, Shannon Briggs and Lamon Brewster had reigns that were far too short to ever really create any cache with American boxing fans.

After decades of American stars from Holyfield and Mike Tyson to Muhammad Ali, George Foreman and Joe Frazier all the way back to the likes of Joe Louis and Jack Dempsey, the country hasn't had a heavyweight champion who can popularize the sport in the states.

But that could all change with the rise of Wilder.

The 6'7" 27-year-old has nearly all the tools to become a superstar in the sport. At 6'7" with a reach of 84", he has the look of a champion. Unlike many of America's former prospects who don't have the size to compete with the larger European champions, Wilder has the reach to even the playing field.

He's also the last American heavyweight to win a medal in the Olympics with his 2008 bronze-medal performance.

But perhaps more importantly, Wilder has power. Devastating power. The kind of power that it takes to capture fans' imaginations and put opponents on his highlight reel. The Alabama native is a perfect 29-0 in his career with 29 knockouts.

None of those 29 opponents have made it beyond the fourth round.

This doesn't mean that Wilder is ready to single-handedly save American heavyweight boxing just yet, though.

As is the case with most prospects that have a jaw-dropping streak of knockouts like Wilder, the names that litter his resume would best be described as "underwhelming." Even his most recent opponent, Siarhei Liakhovich, was 2-4 heading in his last six bouts heading into their bout.

Of course, Wilder bulldozed him in just 1:43 seconds as he defended his WBC Continental Americas heavyweight title.

However, the time is nearing when Wilder will need to test himself against the best in the world. When he does that, he should have a strong contingent of fans rooting for him. If he proves to be the real deal against some of the best boxers in the heavyweight division, he will bring about a revival of America's favorite division.
