Maidana beats Broner: Problem Solved
Dec 15th 2013, 06:02, by admin

by Jordan Capobianco: Everyone who knew anything about boxing said Adrien Broner would win by unanimous decision. Everyone who knew anything about boxing said Marcos Maidana was dangerous, would come out strong, and slowly fade through a combination of Broner’s punches and the energy expenditure of his own missed or blocked shots. The boxer was […]

Leonard Bundu vs. Lee Purdy: European Welterweight Title Fight Report, Reaction
Dec 15th 2013, 04:34, by BR-UK Staff

European welterweight champion Leonard Bundu stopped challenger Lee Purdy in the 12th round of a back-and-forth fight, to deny the Englishman's title challenge at the Excel Arena in London.

As per BBC Sport, Italy's Bundu knocked Purdy to the canvas in the final round with a powerful right-handed blow. The referee called the fight, and Bundu stretched his record to 32 fights unbeaten.

"Two of the judges had Bundu ahead while, remarkably, one had the fight even at the time of the stoppage," read the BBC report.

The 26-year-old Purdy landed a strong blow with his first punch of the night, startling the champion and making him rock on his feet. He continued to connect with body shots, but the BBC report tells of Bundu making his superior class tell.

The 39-year-old Italian leaned on his experience and mixed up his tactics to constantly stay one step ahead of Purdy. Even when things looked to be slipping away from him, Bundu found a way to adjust his approach and take back the initiative.

"Bundu looked like he might be tiring in rounds six and seven but changed tactics in the eighth, moving around the ring and peppering Purdy with snappy combinations," read the BBC Sport report.

Sky Sports' Andy Norman, in his report, wrote of a "cracking fight" that eventually saw the brave Purdy outboxed by Bundu.

Said Bundu of his challenger, after emerging victorious:

He (Purdy) was a very tough, especially with those body shots. After a while I knew I shouldn't go near him, just like my coach told me. It was a good stoppage but he's a tough guy and will come again. He's younger and stronger than I was so I had to use my experience and outbox him.

Norman's account suggests Purdy grew frustrated as the fight drew on, as he attempted to land meaningful punches but was outthought and outfought by Bundu.

Eventually the champion found his opening. A right hook sent Purdy to the deck and ended his title challenge for the evening.

Broner vs. Maidana Results: Winner, Scorecard and Analysis
Dec 15th 2013, 05:08, by Brian Mazique

Problem solved.

In a surprisingly lopsided performance, Marcos Rene Maidana (35-3, 31 KO) dominated Adrien "The Problem" Broner (27-1) at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, winning by unanimous decision. The judges scored the bout 115-110, 116-109 and 117-109—all in Maidana's favor—to crown the Argentinean as the new WBA welterweight champion.

ESPN's Brian Campbell talks about how Maidana got it done:

Broner is as talented as any fighter in boxing today. But Maidana, thanks to a suffocating attack, simply wanted it more and was able to overwhelm and overpower him. Maidana followed the blueprint for intelligent pressure against Broner, drawn up by Daniel Ponce De Leon and Paulie Malignaggi in tight defeats, and applied his punching power appropriately to see through the plan.

From the outset, Maidana showed poise while applying constant pressure. A big right hand dropped Broner in the second round and a huge left hook put him down in the eighth. He was wobbled multiple times in the other rounds.

Perhaps boxer Paulie Malignaggi—who called the fight ringside for Showtime—deserves an assist of sorts for the win. His pressure and ability to land against Broner in their June bout exposed some of The Problem's weaknesses.

Malignaggi didn't have the power to complete the job, and lost by a controversial split-decision. Maidana, however, had the pop necessary to dethrone the formerly unbeaten 24-year-old.

Early in the fight, Broner was messing around, at one point taunting Maidana with a sexual gyration. The 30-year-old Maidana kept his composure, though, and continued to plow ahead. In the 11th, feeling confident and in control, Maidana returned the favor with a similar taunt, to the delight of the fans in attendance.

In an effort to come back on the judges' scorecards, Broner over-dramatized the effect from a Maidana headbutt in the eighth round, falling to the mat and rolling over following the illegal blow. Though referee Laurence Cole took a point from Maidana, the fact that he had dropped Broner earlier in the round made it 9-8 instead of 10-8.

Cole also warned Broner several times for pushing, but never took a point away after threatening to early in the fight.

Support for Broner is already coming in from some of boxing's major players. Floyd Mayweather Jr. tweeted this after the decision was read.

In any case, the right man won the fight and now Broner has to pick up the pieces after suffering the first defeat of his career. Maidana has put himself in position to earn a huge payday in his next fight, and on a short list of fighters who could challenge Mayweather sometime in the future.

Juergen Braehmer vs. Marcus Oliveira: WBA World Title Fight Report, Reaction
Dec 15th 2013, 05:00, by BR-UK Staff

Germany's Juergen Braehmer defeated Marcus Oliveira of America by a unanimous points decision to claim the vacant WBA world light heavyweight title.

As per ESPN, and to the joy of the home crowd in Neubrandenburg, the fight was scored 115-112, 117-110, 117-110 in Braehmer's favour, taking his overall record to 42-2.

Oliveira's defeat means the 34-year-old's career numbers are 25-1-1.

The 35-year-old Braehmer landed a big right in the fifth round and another in the 10th. The latter looked like an illegal low blow, according to ESPN, but the the fight referee thought otherwise and allowed it to stand.

Braehmer's punch in the 10th had Oliveira "down on one knee." He got up, but after a frenetic finish in which Braehme searched relentlessly for a killer blow to stop his opponent, the points decision came and went in the German's favour.

Much of the talk in the build-up to the fight had been about which boxer would enter the ring first.

As per ESPN, Oliveira's promoter Don King—a man who needs no introduction in boxing circles—was adamant his fighter, being the superior in terms of ranking, should appear second to the crowds.

King got his way, with the ESPN account attesting to a hostile reaction when Oliveira finally made his entrance to the ring.

The fight itself didn't get going until after midnight local time in Germany.

Once it did, the fighters engaged in a tight opening few rounds before Braehmer eventually pulled away to take the title.

Rapid Reaction: Maidana upsets Broner
Dec 15th 2013, 04:30, by Brian Campbell

We all knew Marcos Maidana had the punching power to potentially get in the way of brash, unbeaten Adrien Broner's best-laid plans to superstardom. But it turns out the hard-charging Argentine had equally abundant quantities of heart, poise and an unrelenting motor to expose the welterweight titlist on Saturday in a dramatic action bout at the Alamodome in San Antonio. Maidana (35-3, 31 KOs), 30, hurt Broner in the opening round, knocked him down with a hard right hand in Round 2 and went on to simply outwork the 24-year-old to score a unanimous decision (115-110, 116-109, 117-109).

Broner vs. Maidana: Live Round-by-Round Results and Highlights
Dec 15th 2013, 00:00, by Kevin McRae

It's fight night, fans, and we hope you'll join us for our live coverage Saturday night from the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

In our huge main event, WBA welterweight champion Adrien "The Problem" Broner (27-0, 22 KO) defends his title against hard-charging Argentine Marcos "El Chino" Maidana (34-3, 31 KO).

Broner hopes to become the face of the sport once his idol Floyd Mayweather hangs up the gloves. He's supremely talented, but he'll be facing an opponent who is as tough as they come, refuses to be intimidated and seems most dangerous when the odds are against him. Make no mistake, this is a huge test.

In our co-featured bout of the evening, rising welterweight star Keith "One Time" Thurman (21-0, 19 KO) faces by far his most dangerous foe in the form of Jesus Soto Karass (28-8-3, 18 KO).

Thurman is a knockout specialist who places immense pressure on his foe, but Soto Karass is substantially better than his record would indicate, and he'll be extremely dangerous.

In our opening contest, WBC super bantamweight champion Leo Santa Cruz (25-0-1, 15 KO) puts both his belt and his undefeated mark on the line against Cesar Seda (25-1, 17 KO).

It's shaping up to be a very exciting night of boxing. Our live coverage will being here at 8 p.m. ET, and you can catch all the action live on Showtime.
