Andre Ward TKOs Chad Dawson in 10: Boxing Has a New Superstar
Sep 9th 2012, 04:21

In one of the most highly anticipated fights of recent years, undisputed, undefeated super middleweight champion Andre Ward (26-0, 14 KOs) handed a one-sided thrashing to undisputed light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson (31-2, 17 KOs).

Fighting in front of a wildly enthusiastic hometown crowd at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, the 2004 Olympic gold medalist and 2011's The Ring Fighter of the Year turned in what has to be regarded as the greatest performance of his career. After two close feeling-out rounds, Ward dropped Dawson with a quick, compact lead hook to the jaw near the end of Round 3.

Ward followed up by dropping Dawson with a nearly identical punch just seconds into the fourth. Ward pressed hard, looking to finish. Dawson, though clearly hurt, hung tough and even landed some solid countershots to help him survive the onslaught and make it to the bell.

From there the fight settled into a steady pattern of Ward pressing relentlessly, landing with deadly accuracy to Dawson's cut right eye; CompuBox totals showed Ward successfully landed 83 total punches to the area.

Dawson remained game and kept fighting, but Ward's masterful control of distance and stellar footwork managed to completely remove Dawson's normally effective jab from his arsenal.

Even at his best, "Bad" Chad Dawson really doesn't have the style to win a come-from-behind fight. Ward became even more aggressive as he pulled ahead, camping on Dawson's chest and punishing him with brutal uppercuts.

With the fight under control and all but won, Ward managed to land another crushing hook in the 10th, wobbling the Connecticut native. Ward pounced, landing another combination and forcing Dawson to take a knee.

Referee Steve Smoger waved the fight off 2:45 into the round.

It was a stunning performance from the fighter nicknamed Son of God. At 28, Ward continues to get better with each fight. In Dawson, he defeated the larger fighter with his own elite resume and victories over future Hall of Famers.

It is true that Dawson was coming down to 168 for the fight. But that was a weight he had fought at for the first part of his career, and he was steadfast in maintaining that the cut had not been difficult for him.

When I interviewed Dawson by phone a little under two weeks ago, he told me he was already down in the low 170s, so he shouldn't have had to do a ton of draining and last-minute drying out. In his post-fight interview, Dawson was unwilling to make any excuses over the weight, insisting that he didn't want to take anything away from Ward.

At the same time, Ward seemed entirely unconcerned with Dawson's power, so it is possible the drop in weight weakened him overall. If Dawson is able to return to 175 and continue his dominance there, a rematch with Ward a couple of years down the road could once again be an intriguing prospect.

In the meantime, Ward might have trouble finding another opponent worthy of his ever-burgeoning reputation. The top-10 ranking at super middleweight is either full of guys he has already beaten easily, or guys who have lost to guys he has already disposed of easily.

Based on tonight's performance and his run through Showtime's Super Six tournament, I would put S.O.G. firmly at No. 3 in my own pound-for-pound rankings.

A week from today, middleweight champion Sergio Martinez will face No. 1 rival Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Martinez also appears in nearly everybody's top five pound-for-pound rankings, but in my opinion, the former welterweight and junior middleweight would simply be too small for Ward.

With an upset win or even an impressive performance in defeat, Chavez could also be a possibility. He is enormous for the 160-pound division and clearly needs to move up at some point. Coming off a great showing against Martinez would be an ideal time for him to step up and challenge Ward. Of course, if Martinez blows him out, there won't be much interest in that fight, either.

In a sense, Ward might be about to become a victim of his own emerging greatness. He's cleaned out his own division and blown out the top man in the world in the division above him.

Andre Ward was already as technically solid as just about any fighter in the sport. Tonight, he showed an ability to be exciting and dangerous against world-class talent. The sport has its newest superstar, just now entering his prime.

All he needs now is a new opponent.

Andre Ward Should Be No. 2 on Pound-for-Pound List Behind Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Sep 9th 2012, 04:47

Andre Ward turned in the greatest performances of his career when he knocked down Chad Dawson three times before making him quit in the 10th round Saturday night.

Ward made the elite Dawson look rather ordinary from the beginning of the fight. In the third and fourth rounds, Ward floored Dawson with perfectly placed left hooks.

In the 10th round, Ward was so far ahead on the scorecards he could have coasted, but the Oakland native looked to take Dawson out. Ward landed a fierce combination of punches that forced Dawson to take a knee. When Dawson rose to his feet, he told referee Steve Smoger he didn’t want to continue.(h/t HBO broadcast)

With this performance, I believe that Ward has passed Manny Pacquiao and should now be considered No. 2 on the mythical pound-for-pound list.

Both men have beaten great fighters, but the difference is Ward, like the great Floyd Mayweather Jr., has never lost.

In addition to having never lost, Ward has been fighting opponents in their prime while Manny has been fighting guys who were old (Shane Mosley), on the decline (Antonio Margarito) or tailor-made for him (Ricky Hatton).

Ward, over the last three years, has fought and beat every elite fighter placed in front of him and has done so in remarkable fashion.

As great as Manny Pacquiao is, he has not looked very impressive in his last couple of fights and is showing signs of slipping. Manny is an exciting "all action" fighter, but he is not the complete package in the ring that Ward is.

The pound-for-pound list is about who is the best fighter; not the most popular, not the most crowd pleasing, but who has the most skills in the ring.

Andre Ward’s dominating performance of the reigning light heavyweight champion and the body of work he has put together over his career shows he belongs at the No. 2 spot.

Andre Ward KOs Chad Dawson, Asserting His Place Among Pound-for-Pound Best
Sep 9th 2012, 04:49

Andre Ward put on the best showing of his career, dominating Chad Dawson on way to a 10th-round knockout in their super middleweight title fight in Oakland, Calif. Saturday night.

Dawson had a good Round 1, but Ward (26-0, 14 KOs) took over the rest of the way, knocking Dawson down in the third and fourth rounds, leaving Dawson (31-2, 17 KOs) a sluggish fighter towards the end of the bout, until the knockout occurred in Round 10.

Ward now cements his place as on of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world by beating Dawson, the reigning WBC light heavyweight champ, who went down in weight to take on Ward at 168 pounds.

Although  he is not known for being an overly exciting fighter, Ward put on the show of his career and his star should soar going forward.

He is now worthy of being mentioned among the best-of-the-best fighters out there, namely Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao.

As Mayweather and Pacquiao are entering the twilight of their illustrious careers, Ward is poised to lead the new generation of boxing superstars well into the future if he continues to fight at the level he was at Saturday night.

Dawson will have to move past this loss and focus on the light heavyweight division, as he can still rule the 175-pound division if his confidence isn't too damaged.

For the past few years, Lucas Matthysse has built a reputation as a hard-luck fighter who was unable to secure the benefit of the doubt from American judges in the two biggest fights of his career. But after his two most recent bouts -– culminating in Saturday's dismantling of an incredibly gutsy Olusegun Ajose at the Hard Rock in Las Vegas -– you could now make the case that Matthysse is rebranding himself as the best fighter in the world at 140 pounds.

Ward graduates with beat-down of Dawson
Sep 9th 2012, 04:42

Andre Ward, glove and all, reached his mitt down Chad Dawson's throat and yanked out the heart of the Connecticut boxer on Saturday night in Oakland. In a "best vs the best scrap," the 168-pound king invited the 175-pound ace, Dawson, down to his weight class ... and then proceeded to make him wish he pretended the invite blew off his porch. Yes, let us say that Dawson will not clamor for a return to that neighborhood; the Oakland resident Ward knocked him down in the third, the fourth and the 10th, forcing Dawson to tell the ref that he wanted no mas of Ward's punishment at the Oracle Arena.

Andre Ward vs. Chad Dawson: Ward Dominates, TKO's Dawson in Tenth
Sep 9th 2012, 03:35

Super middleweight champion Andre Ward dominated and defeated light-heavyweight champion Chad Dawson by technical knockout in the tenth round Saturday night, in Oakland, California.

Ward (26-0 13 KO) knocked Dawson (31-2-1 17 KO) down three times, including the final time in round ten when Dawson signaled he had enough, to stop him with stunning ease. With the victory, Ward retained the WBC and WBA 168 pound titles.

"These kind of fights Larry you have to take risks, you have to, or a it could be a snoozer or you could mess around and lose your title to a guy of that caliber," Ward told Larry Merchant in the ring after the fight.

From the beginning of the fight, it was clear that Ward was the smoother boxer and harder puncher.

He outlanded Dawson in every single round and most by wide margins. According to Compubox, Ward landed 155 punches to only 29 for Dawson.

It was nothing short of mastery and complete dominance.

Dawson was cut over the right eye in round two by an accidental headbutt and never seemed to get on track.

After the third knockdown in round ten, Dawson rose to his feet and appeared to tell referee Steve Smoger that he was done.

Dawson was also down in the third and fourth rounds.

"He was a lot stronger, a lot faster than I thought," Dawson told Larry Merchant in the ring after the fight. "He's an excellent champion. He deserves to be where he's at right now."

Dawson added that he plans to return to light-heavyweight and to defend his title there.

Could Ward be far behind him?

For a fight that was as anticipated as this one, it was shockingly one-sided and established Ward as boxing's newest superstar.

"I love to win Larry. Ya know I've gotten a bad rap early in my career. A lot of people say I didn't have it," Ward told Merchant. "But that's okay because that's what young fighters get. I'm still working. But like I tell everybody finishing guys off is the last piece of the puzzle and we're on our way to doing that."

Ward was non-committal about his future plans in the post-fight interview, but he would not rule out a move to light-heavyweight in the future.

Olusegun Ajose hoped that his slickness edge would bring him to a win against bomber Lucas Matthysse on Saturday night at the Hard Rock in Las Vegas. But the Argentine was in seek-and-destroy mode from the first round, and the Nigerian-born NYC resident wasn't able to outbox the man with the heavier hands. With one second to go in the 10th round, the ref hopped in and saved Ajose from further punishment, giving Matthysse the W, via TKO. Matthysse went 290-698, to 153-561 for the loser.

Have Pacquiao's Out-of-the-Ring Endeavors Distracted Him Late in His Career?
Sep 9th 2012, 01:31

Manny Pacquiao (54-4-2) has been in the public eye since he began dazzling boxing fans with his quickness, aggressiveness and punching ability since he turned professional in 1995.

His name and popularity have only grown with each title that he's gained and each fight card that he's headlined.

Right now, there are two big names in boxing who are superior to the rest. They are Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Pacquiao.

There is no fight that fans want to see more than a Mayweather—Pacquiao battle. However, it has never happened, and it may never come about.

The reasons are myriad and mysterious. But, neither fighter has let much grass grow under their feet even if the big fight has not been scheduled.

In addition to fighting regularly, Pacquiao has many interests outside the boxing ring. He has recorded music, he has started acting and he has gotten involved in politics.

Of those three, his political ambitions in his native Philippines may eventually overtake his boxing career. He represents the Sarangani district, and his recent political speeches have included references to his accomplishments as a politician (Frank Warren of BoxingScene).

Pacquiao is planning to run for office again, and his name gives him a big advantage in local political contests. However, it does not seem likely that Pacquiao will merely be satisfied with a seat in the Congress in the Philippines.

He may have an interest in eventually becoming the President of his nation, perhaps within the next 10 years.

It appears as though the outside interests have had an impact on his performance in the ring. While Pacquiao is the only man ever to hold world titles in eight weight classes, he has not been as sharp in the ring in recent bouts.

Since stopping Miguel Cotto in 2009, he has not had a single knockout or TKO. He won three unanimous decisions before coming away with a majority decision over Juan Manuel Marquez. He also lost a decision to Timothy Bradley in June that was later reversed by a WBO panel. Even with that reversal, Pacquiao has not been displaying the punching power that he had earlier in his career.

In addition to his interest in politics, Pacquiao fancies himself as something of a singer. His version of "Sometimes When We Touch" became a YouTube curiosity after he sang the song on the Jimmy Kimmel Show.

Whether Pacquiao can make it in acting or singing is questionable, but he does appear to have a legitimate future in politics in his homeland.

Boxing requires a full commitment. At the age of 33, it may be hard for Pacquiao to ever match what he has done in the past since his attentions seem to be divided.

Until he can put together an explosive and dominating win over an upper-echelon opponent, it's fair to say that Pacquiao's outside-the-ring activities, along with the aging process, have distracted him from giving his full attention to being the best he can be in the ring.

Klitschko vs Charr: Heavyweight Fight Re-Establishes Ukranian's Absurd Power
Sep 9th 2012, 02:02

Vitali Klitschko may retire after successfully defending his WBC title against Manuel Charr on Saturday, but that doesn't take away from the match's profound message.

Klitschko is strong. His fists could be made of steel, and I wouldn't be shocked in the least. You probably already knew this about the Ukranian heavyweight, but Saturday night's dominant victory solidified that fact.

He's 45-2 with 41 knockout victories in his career. At 41 years old, he still strikes fear into any opponent who is unlucky enough to step into the ring with him.

Given his reputation coming into the match, Charr wasn't given much of a chance. He was 21-0 coming into the Moscow-based bout, but his 11 knockouts were a glaring weakness, especially against a notoriously heavy-fisted champion.

According to ESPN.com. Klitschko trails only Rocky Marciano in knockout percentage. He's KO'd 87.2 percent of his challengers as compared to Marciano's 87.8.

Interestingly enough, Vitali's brother Wladimir is fourth on the list at 83.6, but that's besides the point.

Saturday night's bout was never close. Charr's record gave him considerable hype when the two fighters took the ring, but Klitschko made him look like an amateur for three rounds.

The highlight of the fight came on a third-round knockdown. Charr took a hard right hand, went down and got up smiling. I've never boxed professionally, but that seems like a terrible idea.

Klitschko has a good reason for retirement. According to ESPN, he's running for a seat in the Ukranian Parliament, and the election is October 28. His victory over Charr was his ninth career title defense, and he really has nothing left to prove.

Watching someone get hit by Klitschko's massive right hand almost hurts television viewers. His power is stunning, and that makes defeating him nearly impossible.

He may hang up his gloves, but Saturday night's fight was a fitting conclusion.

Bleacher Report - Boxing: Manny Pacquiao Must Avoid Fighting Juan Marquez for 4th Time

Manny Pacquiao Must Avoid Fighting Juan Marquez for 4th Time
Sep 9th 2012, 00:54

Manny Pacquiao has to avoid the looming and lucrative proposition to schedule longtime nemesis Juan Manuel Marquez for his next fight.

However, the smart money is on Marquez being his next opponent. As it is now, according to ESPN's Dan Rafael, who reported information passed along by boxing commission executive director Keith Kizer, Manny is scheduled to take the ring on December 8 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

This is the third scheduled date for Pacquiao's next bout, and through that all, he has not settled on an opponent. His list for viable candidates is shrinking.

As Rafael also pointed out, Miguel Cotto recently booked a December 1 bout versus junior middleweight titlist Austin Trout.

Pacquiao has already easily dispatched of Cotto once in their careers, but after a strong showing against Floyd Mayweather Jr., Cotto's career and popularity are on the rise.

Rafael pointed out that Cotto was one of three names the Pacquiao's camp had been discussing, with the other two being Marquez and Timothy Bradley Jr.

Given the choice between these two fighters, Pacquiao should ensure his next opponent is Bradley. Those two are fresh off a thrilling and controversial fight on June 9. The controversy came when Pacquiao lost his welterweight belt in a judges decision that almost everyone watching the fight felt was bogus.

This is Pacquiao's chance to right that wrong. He could piece together an even more convincing effort and this time actually walk away with the win. It would be a boost to his legacy, and it would be a crowd-pleasing bout, as was the last one.

However, as Edwin Espejo of Rappler.com points out, Pacquiao's lawyer said that Bradley is out of the equation. So that leaves us to revisit the tired rivalry with Marquez.

So all attention turns to Marquez. He and Pacquiao have waged three previous bouts. Pacquiao leads their rivalry, 2-0-1.

They have all been entertaining bouts, and they are certainly not without controversy. Every decision has plenty of people who say the wrong decision was made.

The problem is that there is little for Pacquiao to gain in this bout. Sure, he could secure the one convincing win in this rivalry, but what are the chances of that?

After three bouts, it is pretty clear the counterpunching of Marquez is going to keep him in the ring and battling Manny punch for punch. This leaves Manny with little to gain and nothing to lose.

Should he lose that bout with Marquez, it would be his second straight loss, and he can kiss any bargaining power with a future superfight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. goodbye. This is a needless risk in this instance.

There are bigger questions for Manny to answer in a fight with Bradley, and he has more to gain since he can essentially erase the stain of the controversial loss.
