Vasquez vs. Gonzalez: Winner, Recap and Analysis
Oct 27th 2013, 05:39, by Maxwell Ogden

Live from the Sports City Gym in San Jose, Costa Rica, Bryan Vasquez defeated Rene Gonzalez in five rounds to win the interim WBA Super Featherweight Championship. It was a controversial and confusing ending that saw the fight go to the cards after just five rounds.

The match was even for the duration of the fight, but Vasquez and Gonzalez missed on punches and collided with an inadvertent headbutt. This rattled both men enough for the referee to call the fight and send the decision to the scorecards.

From there, it was Vasquez who saw a narrow edge with the judges and thus won via unanimous decision.

It was a physical fight between the two in-ring warriors, as they traded blows and swapped control of momentum throughout. Vasquez appeared to be the more aggressive of the two fighters, which ultimately led to his victory.

Just five rounds in, it's difficult to honor strategy when the sample size is so small.

Due to the premature ending of the fight, it's unclear if this was a part of Gonzalez's strategy. He was playing strong defense, specifically with his head fakes and glove work, but a small sample size results in uncertainty when it comes to how his approach would've played out.

In the end, his inability to take full control early led to a unanimous-decision victory in Vasquez's favor.

Vasquez is now the interim WBA Super Featherweight champion. Takashi Uchiyama was originally the champion, but the WBA opted to create an interim bout.

On a night in which crazy endings dominated the sports world, Vasquez may have earned the wildest one of all.

Hopkins beats Murat in chippy, fun fight
Oct 27th 2013, 04:55, by Michael Woods

Bernard Hopkins had to work much harder than I dare say most everyone believed he'd have to against Karo Murat in the main event at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City on Saturday night. The fight was a most entertaining but ultra-chippy affair. Hopkins ate some leather and dished it out, even more so, en route to a unanimous decision win, via scores of 117-110, 119-108, 119-108. Here's a breakdown of the rounds. In the first round, Murat looked better than many expected.

Hopkins vs. Murat Results: Winner, Scorecard and Analysis
Oct 27th 2013, 04:07, by Joseph Zucker

Bernard Hopkins retained his IBF light heavyweight title after earning a unanimous decision against Karo Murat, 117-110, 119-108, 119-108, via Showtime Sports.

The 48-year-old Hopkins runs his record to 54-6-2, while Murat falls to 25-2-1. The win also makes Hopkins the oldest person to ever defend a world title, via ESPN Stats & Info.

Hopkins was the deserved winner, especially when you possibly take into account any sort of champion's advantage. Murat didn't do enough to take the fight to the champ and often found himself on the back foot. It's shocking to think that a fighter 18 years his opponent's junior would be timid in the ring.

That probably speaks more to the longevity of Hopkins, though, and the respect he received from Murat. Or perhaps the talent gap between the two was just that large.

One of the more surprising aspects of the fight was how aggressive Hopkins was. This is a fighter whose last knockout came all the way back in 2004. "B-Hop" has proven so successful by dragging out fights and relying on his defense.

Hopkins looked to be feeling out Murat in the early rounds and then devised a game plan for how to go on the offensive in the second half of the fight.

Sports Illustrated's Chris Mannix thought the champion had one of his most aggressive performances in years.

Mixed in with the actual boxing were some of the more surreal scenes you'll ever see in a ring.

When one guy (Hopkins) wears an alien mask into the ring, you have to know you're going to be in for a long night, via The Guardian's Alex McClintock.

Apparently, Hopkins has changed his name from "The Executioner" to "The Alien," which makes sense because you have to wonder if he's actually of this world.

B-Hop was doing his best to throw Murat off his game. He stuck his tongue out after getting tagged to try and show that he wasn't phased and shoved Murat in the face for no other reason other than to rile his opponent up. He also kissed Murat's head at one point, via ESPN's Dan Rafael.

As you'd expect, the 30-year-old German had had it up to here with Hopkins' antics. When the champion's momentum took him down in the sixth round, Murat saw an opportunity to get a couple extra blows in.

Boxing writer Ryan Songalia was astounded by how crazy this fight turned out to be.

The antics between the two fighters helped to make the spectacle that much more entertaining. The early rounds lacked much drama and excitement. Then, at about the fifth round, when Hopkins kissed Murat, the flight took a turn toward the bizarre and didn't come back.

At least after that, both guys started going at one another, and this turned into an actual fight.

Hopkins deserves all the plaudits, though he should be criticized a bit for some of his unprofessional behavior. At the end of the night, he's still the champ.

Ranking Bernard Hopkins' Best Options for Next Fight
Oct 27th 2013, 04:27, by Lyle Fitzsimmons

Ho-hum, Bernard Hopkins won another fight.

Though it’s patently unfair to diminish what the Philadelphia veteran has been doing in the ring over the last several years, the fact is that the 48-year-old has beaten foes young enough to be his kids for so long that it’s starting to become old hat.

Case in point, Hopkins entered his Saturday night IBF light heavyweight title defense against 30-year-old Karo Murata fight he won by wide decision at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J.as a bigger favorite (a $900 wager was required to recoup $100 at Bovada) than Filipino star Manny Pacquiao ($450 is needed to win $100) is for his November return against Brandon Rios.

Nonetheless, the one-sided defeat of the IBF’s unheralded No. 2 contender did precisely what it was supposed to do: Keep Hopkins active, successful and in position to continue a remarkable run of late-career relevance that seemed all but impossible when he dropped the second of two straight decisions to then-unbeaten Jermain Taylor nearly eight years ago.

Regardless of how long he chooses to continueHopkins claimed a desire earlier this year to unify the 175-pound belts by the time he turns 50 in 2015the fighter now rechristened as “The Alien” will have no shortage of potential foils for as long as he’s a main event commodity.

Here are the men who warrant top consideration for the next go-round.

Quillin stops Rosado in eighth on cut
Oct 27th 2013, 05:15, by Dan Rafael

"Kid Chocolate" Peter Quillin retained his middleweight title for the second time when his fight against Gabriel Rosado was stopped because of the cut over Rosado's eye 40 seconds into the 10th round Saturday night in Atlantic City, N.J.

Quillin vs. Rosado: Winner, Scorecard and Analysis
Oct 27th 2013, 03:54, by Maxwell Ogden

In one of the most brutal fights of the evening, Peter Quillin defeated Gabriel Rosado to retain the WBO Middleweight Championship. Quillin won the fight via referee stoppage during the 10th round and moved to 30-0 with 22 knockouts.

Here's how the judges had it scored before the fight was called, per Dan Rafael of ESPN.

Those scores were surprisingly lopsided.

Rosado, 21-7-1, stepped up to the challenge and gave Quillin a run for his money. He landed quality punches in what was a fight without any form of extraordinary precision.

Quillin did manage a second-round knockdown, but it wasn't the dominant display the scorecards would suggest. There's no question he was the better fighter on this night, but the judge's decision to create a large disparity is relatively surprising.

Rosado's face looked worse than his fighting ability was.

Both men landed quality strikes throughout the evening, but it was Quillin who seemed to make the most of his opportunities. Dan Rafael of ESPN reports that the champion landed 88 punches to 80 from Rosado, with neither fighter converting more than 30 percent of their respective attempts.

In the end, a cut above Rosado's eye proved to be too much for the fight to continue.

Rosado wanted the fight to go on, but the referee refused to let him continue.

In the end, it was the right decision.

Rosado's eye was bleeding heavily, and it was only going to get worse with the way Quillin began to land power punches in the later rounds. That proved to be the deciding factor for the champion, who retained his title on a night in which his undefeated record was on the line.

It wasn't his most glamorous display, but Quillin continues to rise in the middleweight division.
