Garcia wins, but doesn't entertain
Jan 26th 2014, 05:58, by Michael Woods

Mikey Garcia has been talked up by promoter Bob Arum as a pound-for-pound ace, someone who could help lead the sport when the Mayweathers and Pacquiaos exit stage left. He'll need to offer just a bit more entertainment value, though, than he showed on Saturday night against a foe, Juan Carlos Burgos, who looked to survive, and not thrive, to get to the next level of popularity. Garcia (34-0; from California) retained his WBO super feather crown at the MSG Theater, via scores of 118-110, 118-110, 119-109, but the fans were sitting on their hands during a bout woefully short of action and buzz.

Mikey Garcia vs. Juan Carlos Burgos: Winner, Scorecard and Analysis
Jan 26th 2014, 05:00, by Brian Mazique

The potential clash with Mikey Garcia (34-0) and Top Rank Boxing stablemate Manny “Pac-Man” Pacquiao is still on track. Garcia successfully defended his WBO super featherweight title on Saturday from Madison Square Garden Theater in New York against Juan Carlos Burgos (30-2-2).

Garcia won the fight by a lopsided unanimous decision. HBO Boxing has the official scores:

It obviously wasn't the spectacular knockout we have become accustomed to seeing from Garcia, but it was still a dominant performance for the champion.

Early on, the fight was partially competitive, but Garcia took over around the third round and coasted the rest of the way.

HBO's Jim Lampley offers his take on Garcia's latest victory:

This wasn't the type of explosive performance that Garcia has given his fans over the last three years. However, in some ways, it was even more impressive. Garcia showed he was capable of dismantling a well-schooled veteran with his boxing skills—not just his power.

This diverse skill set is why his promoter is so high on him.

Top Rank head man Bob Arum told Steve Kim of Max Boxing that he would like to have Garcia face Pacquiao by the end of 2014. It would require a two-weight-class leap for Garcia, but the 26-year-old looks like the type of talent who could pull off the trick.

Maintaining his spotless record keeps Garcia moving up the pound-for-pound list, and it helps romanticize the thoughts of major bouts with the likes of Pacquiao.

Even if something falls apart en route to that clash, Garcia is on a path to face someone who will represent a big payday. The name Yuriorkis Gamboa was mentioned multiple times during the HBO broadcast. Garcia was asked by HBO's Max Kellerman after the bout how he would handle Gamboa and Pacquiao's speed.

Per Isaac Estrada of Real Boxing News, Garcia said:

Burgos’ loss was just the latest in a string of disappointing results for him. He had to settle for a draw in each of his last two bouts. The first in that string was a disputed decision against the man Garcia defeated to win the title, Roman Martinez.

Overall, Saturday’s loss was Burgos’ third unsuccessful attempt to win a world title. He’s only 26 years old, so the boxing world will be seeing more of him shortly. But at some point, he’ll have to break through to avoid being seen as nothing more than a gatekeeper.

Rapid Reaction: Jennings stops Szpilka
Jan 26th 2014, 03:34, by Brian Campbell

After outboxing fellow unbeaten heavyweight Artur Szpilka for nine rounds Saturday, Bryant Jennings came through with an exclamation point to close out a showcase performance. Moments after scoring his second knockdown of the fight on a hard left hook in Round 10, Jennings poured it on in the corner to force the stoppage in front of a sold-out crowd of 4,829 at the Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York. Jennings (18-0, 10 KOs), 29, fought just one time in 2013 due to a promotional switch after posting five wins in a breakthrough 2012 campaign.

Lamont Peterson vs. Dierry Jean: Winner, Scorecard and Analysis
Jan 26th 2014, 04:34, by Brian Mazique

In front of his hometown crowd at the D.C. Armory in Washington, D.C., IBF light welterweight champion Lamont “Havoc” Peterson (32-2-1) successfully defended his title. He took down Dierry Jean (25-1) by unanimous decision.

Officially, the fight was scored as follows, per Showtime Sports:

I scored the fight 117-111 for the champion as well.

Peterson rebounded from a devastating loss at the hands of Lucas Matthysse in his last fight. Matthysse stopped him in the third round of their bout in May 2013. This type of performance is consistent with the character that has allowed Peterson to persevere through a variety of hardships.

He has overcome a tough upbringing, professional losses and suspensions during his career.

Showtime Sports captures analyst Steve Farhood's take on Peterson's resilience.

There were some concerns as to how he would respond after the KO defeat, but Peterson put those worries to rest quickly. He was clearly the aggressor as he beat Jean to the punch most of the night.

The challenger needed to be busier, but he couldn't seem to get off as much as he needed to. When he did put combinations together, he had his moments. He seemed to want to potshot Peterson and crumble him with one-shot power punches, but the champion's chin and will were strong.

Jean came into the fight undefeated but as a relative unknown. He hadn’t faced anyone on par with Peterson, and his lack of top-notch competition showed. When asked after the fight why he lost, he pointed to a lack of experience as the culprit.

The win has Havoc right back in the mix to face some of the biggest names at light welterweight or welterweight. When the fight was over, Showtime Sports captured Peterson partially calling out WBA and WBC champion, Danny "Swift" Garcia.

Jean may get another opportunity to fight on a big stage, but he squandered an opportunity to make a major statement and to become a world champion. At 30 years old, this was a pretty significant defeat for the Canadian.

He'll have to go back to the drawing board in hopes of finding some answers.
