The drumbeat to sign on against a superstar, or at least a name guy with a more-than-solid resume, will beat louder after Adrien Broner knocked out Gavin Rees on Saturday night at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. Broner, from Cincinnati, dropped Welshman Rees in the fourth round, and then again in the fifth. Rees, who'd never been down in a fight, even in sparring, rose but took shots, and his corner waved a white flag with a second remaining. Broner, the WBC lightweight champ, termed Rees tougher than an overcooked steak afterwards, and that he was and more.

Adrien Broner Defeats Gavin Rees via 5th-Round TKO to Keep WBC Lightweight Title
Feb 17th 2013, 05:19

Adrien Broner (26-0) successfully defended his WBC lightweight title after defeating Gavin Rees (37-2-1) by way of a TKO in the fifth round in Atlantic City on Saturday night.

Rees came out as the aggressor in the opening rounds and was able to keep Broner relatively quiet early on. Granted, Rees didn't land any real impact punches other than a nasty hook to Broner's head, but he was the busier fighter, and that led to an undeniable victory in each of the first two rounds.

It wasn't until the third round that Broner's showmanship took a backseat to some serious fighting. The Problem landed a devastating combo on Rees that pushed the fighter from Wales against the ropes, but Rees was able to escape.

That was the start of Rees' troubles.

In the fourth, Broner dropped Rees to the canvas with a nasty right uppercut in what was only the second knockdown of the 32-year-old's career. However, that didn't seem to phase Rees all that much, as he continued to give Broner a challenging contest.

The fifth round led to more damage on Rees, and after taking some serious combinations, Rees was once again dropped to his knee after a crushing body blow. Shortly thereafter, Broner unleashed another combo that forced Rees' corner to throw in the towel.

With the win, Broner adds yet another impressive showing to his resume and remains undefeated as the WBC lightweight titleholder.

On the flip side, Rees' first fight in the states was just about as much of a success as he could've hoped. He landed more punches than the champion and made this a fight early on, but in the end the more talented fighter won.

Bleacher Report - Boxing: Adrien Broner TKO's His Way to Impressive Victory over Gavin Rees

Adrien Broner TKO's His Way to Impressive Victory over Gavin Rees
Feb 17th 2013, 05:31

Adrien "The Problem" Broner showed why he is considered boxing's next big star Saturday night, beating tough Welshman Gavin Rees by TKO in Round 5 to retain his WBC lightweight title.

After a strong start by Rees (37-2-1, 18 KOs), even being scored ahead of Broner (26-0, 22 KOs) on HBO's Harold Leaderman's card, Broner was toying around a too much in the first couple of rounds without much action. Broner then took charge of the fight in Round 3 and never let up.

In the fourth round Broner displayed his impressive knockout power by flooring Rees for just the second time in his career with a vicious uppercut. Rees showed heart and made it out of the round, but his corner almost stopped the bout.

Broner then overwhelmed Rees again in Round 5, although Rees landed his fair amount of shots and eventually caused Rees to take a knee after a huge upper cut to the body. The end of the bout was only matter of time.

Opening up on Rees as he came out of the standing eight-count, Broner caused Rees' corner to throw in the towel, giving Broner the TKO win.

Broner took some good shots with little effect and should send even more of a message to the boxing world that not only can Broner land a power shot, he can take one as well.

With no real big names in the lightweight division, the best thing for Broner to do is to move up to the 140-pound junior welterweight division. The junior welterweight division is full of names that will excite fans and add more lure to Broner's star power.

As Broner entertained on his way to the ring, while in the ring with his superior boxing skills and devastating power and through his cocky, but fitting taunts, "The Problem" should have no problems being one of the biggest stars in boxing for many years to come.

Bleacher Report - Boxing: Broner vs. Rees: Victory for 'The Problem' Will Cement Him as Division's Best

Broner vs. Rees: Victory for 'The Problem' Will Cement Him as Division's Best
Feb 17th 2013, 01:22

As the WBC lightweight champion, Adrien Broner is already at the top of his division, but he can cement his place with a victory over Gavin Rees on Saturday night in Atlantic City.

Broner (25-0) won his belt after disposing of former champion Antonio DeMarco last November with an eighth-round TKO that helped fully establish him as a stud in the lightweight division.

Before his win over DeMarco, Broner had handled other top fighters mostly from the super featherweight division. His credibility as a lightweight fighter is no doubt respectable, but "The Problem" is still building his legacy in the division.

His opponent in this bout, Rees (37-1-1), stands in Broner's way and could end The Problem's championship campaign rather quickly.

The 32-year-old has won his last two bouts and enters this fight with a ton of momentum as he tries to capture the lightweight crown and his second career world title. Rees has far more experience as a lightweight fighter than Broner.

The Problem may be a heavy favorite in this contest, but the relative unknown that is Rees could present a problem for Broner.

Rees has never fought in the states before but has an impressive resume overseas. If one international fighter can challenge Broner and give him a run for his money, it's Rees.

In fact, even Broner has admitted he doesn't know much about Rees, per George Willis of the New York Post:

I really don’t know this guy. I just want him to bring his 'A' game because if you want to get things just right you have to bring nothing but your ‘A’ game. I just hope he’s ready and I hope he is in shape because it’s going to be a long night.

Clearly, Broner isn't underestimating his opponent, which is important to avoid a letdown. However, Rees will bring an unpredictable element with him into this fight, so the chance remains that he can pull off an upset.

Besides, a man with Rees' outstanding record must be respected as a top competitor in the lightweight division.

If Broner goes ahead and takes care of business against Rees, it will be yet another major victory for the 23-year-old. At this early stage of his career, The Problem will have already beaten the best this continent has to offer as well as the best the world has to offer.

A decisive victory for Broner would be a major stepping stone toward Broner gaining legendary status in the lightweight division.

Bleacher Report - Boxing: Floyd Mayweather: Breaking Down Potential Matchup with Robert Guerrero

Floyd Mayweather: Breaking Down Potential Matchup with Robert Guerrero
Feb 17th 2013, 01:04

Robert Diaz, Golden Boy Promotions matchmaker, is reporting Floyd Mayweather’s May 4 return to the ring will be in a bout against Robert Guerrero. The news broke on Feb. 15 thanks to Chris Williams of BoxingNews24.com.

On fight night it will have been one year since "Money" stepped in the squared circle, leaving many to wonder if the aging champion is ready for another dive into the breach.

Mayweather, 35, will change things up in his preparation. He has opted to have his father in the corner as his main trainer leading up to his May 4 return, according to ESPN’s Dan Rafael.

His relationship with his father—who trained him as a child—has been rocky at best over the years. Mayweather Sr. has spent time incarcerated, and Mayweather's brother has carried the duties of lead trainer for much of his absence. Mayweather himself just finished serving a stint behind bars.

Changes are good, but a series of changes like Mayweather is undergoing may not be conducive to continued success in the ring.

Let’s take a look at if he has anything to worry about in the ring against Guerrero, his presumed opponent.

Tale of the Tape (via BoxRec.com)

Name: Robert Guerrero

Age: 29 (Will turn 30 before fight day)

Record: 31-1-1 (18 KOs)

Height: 5'8"

Reach: 70"

Stance: Southpaw

Nickname: The Ghost

Birth Place: Gilroy, Calif.

Strengths

Guerrero is a volume striker that throws, but doesn’t necessarily land, a lot of punches. That will be a good thing against Mayweather—Guerrero will need to be active with his hands by throwing a lot of shots Mayweather's way in order to penetrate his impressive and technically-sound defense.

Quickness is the key for "The Ghost". The speed of his punches mostly makes up for anything he is lacking in the power department—he can catch opponents with a series of punches that will have the same desired effect of a power punch.

Weaknesses

Punching power is a problem for Guerrero and will plague him in a fight against Mayweather. "Money" wins his fights, for the most part, by playing great defense and countering opponents to death.

Outlook

Mayweather may be surprised by southpaws from time to time, but Guerrero doesn’t seem to have an explosive burst that could put him on the mat. If the fight goes the distance, and it likely will, it will take an extremely impressive showing from Guerrero, and a letdown from Mayweather, for the upset to occur.
