Various media outlets have reported this week that Manny Pacquiao, one of the two best pound for pound fighters in the world, plans on returning to the ring on December 8 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
An opponent has not yet been named but the date appeared certain. Or perhaps not.
According to a report from BoxingScene.com, Top Ranks chief rival promotion, Golden Boy Promotions, has "verbally" informed Nevada State Athletic Commission Director Keith Kizer that they are planning on staging an event at the MGM Grand on the same date.
Kizer went on to say that Golden Boy claimed to have had the MGM Grand reserved for "months."
In an interview with Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer, BoxingScene fleshed out more of the details of the event.
"We've had that for a long time. We've had the date on pay-per-view for a long time as well," said Schaefer.
"We are working on a big event for December the 8th and I'm going to leave it at that for now."
In order for the date to become official, a promotional company must submit a written request to the NSAC. According to Kizer, only Top Rank has done so.
BoxingScene goes on to report that the Golden Boy event is dependent on the outcome of the September 15th junior middleweight championship fight between Saul Canelo Alvarez and Josesito Lopez.
It seems as though a Canelo victory could lead to a PPV-headlining gig in December.
