Filipino bantamweight up-and-comer Juan Miguel Elorde (11-1-0, 4 KO) got back on the winning track Saturday, September 29, living up to expectations by posting a lopsided victory over fellow countryman Arjet Caballes (6-22-2, 3 KO) on his home turf, the Flash Elorde Grand Ballroom.
In front of an enthusiastic crowd composed of local supporters, friends and family, Elorde put on a boxing clinic against the career-long struggling Caballes, who, with a dismal record that includes 22 defeats, could be considered as tune-up fodder.
Elorde, who made his professional debut in 2008, started his career with 10 consecutive victories, four of which came by way of knockout.
However, in his first stateside outing at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino last November 2011, Elorde lost to fellow undefeated fighter, Jerry Guevarra of Texas.
Caballes, on the other hand, was on a four-match losing streak since August 2011, and he has lost 11 of his past 12 fights, serving as an easy pick for numerous local fighters who want to add another strike to their win column.
The mismatch was apparent from the beginning, with Elorde going straight to work and landing numerous sets of combinations on an unresponsive Caballes.
The first round ended with cheers from the Elorde crowd, as Caballes already looked winded in his corner and unprepared to take on a fighter with Elorde's skill set.
The second round held more of the same dominance, except this time Elorde slammed several straight right hands directly on Caballes' face.
Caballes finally showed a bit of activity in the third round, letting go a few two-punch combinations that couldn't seem to find their target. Elorde adjusted easily and utilized his sharp left jabs to pile on the points on his opponent.
The fourth and fifth rounds were practically identical, with Caballes setting off on futile attempts at scoring and Elorde neutralizing his every attack and countering and punishing him with power and precision.
It was a long night for Caballes, being treated like nothing more than a moving punching bag, and a great exhibition of ability for Elorde.
Elorde got the win by unanimous decision, with all three judges scoring the bout at 60-54.
Perhaps the only surprise in the bout was how Caballes managed to stay afoot despite the grueling onslaught dealt to him by Elorde.
Clearly, the fight achieved its objective of showcasing the young Elorde being ready to once again begin his quest for global contention and hopefully one day having his name alongside established countrymen like Nonito Donaire, Manny Pacquiao and his very own grandfather, the legendary Gabriel "The Flash" Elorde.
