With recent reports of Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. testing positive for marijuana in his last fight against Sergio Martinez, many have been weighing in on their thoughts via Twitter and fight forums.
Unfortunately, many know of Julio's legendary father, Chavez Sr., and his battle with drug addiction, as we even saw a scene in HBO's 24/7 where we learn that Julio took his father to rehab against the Mexican national hero's wishes, which caused him to be angry with his son, but later realizing it was the right thing to do in order to save him.
So the question is, with the drug addiction history in his family genes, is Chavez Jr. already having drug problems just as his dad did dealing with the pressures of fame and being a national iconic prize fighter?
Chavez Jr. has already been under some heat for his DUI last year right before a fight against Rubio, and some in the fight game have even expressed their suspicions of his drug testing before and after fights, such as highly respected legendary trainer/boxing commentator Emmanuel Steward.
This news made me think of when I was back in junior high school and there was a thug kid named John who would always get into fights and would brag about how good he could take punches from who ever challenged him after school.
One day, this punk kid John bragged to me that he felt the secret to why he was able to absorb so much punishment in his fights was because he would smoke marijuana right before the fight, so it made him feel invincible in a sense.
John did get hit cleanly and hard by much bigger guys in his fights, but for whatever reason, he was able to not only take their punches, but mock them after getting hit, causing many of his opponents to back off or get beat up by him.
Marijuana, according to this kid John, enabled him to get hit, but to not get hurt at least during the actual fight and to win most of his fights.
Silly, I know, but for him, it worked, as I and many in my junior high class witnessed him win fight after fight until he was later finally suspended and then expelled for, you guessed it, fighting.
So it makes me wonder: Did marijuana help Chavez take all those punches by Sergio Martinez last Saturday night? Did it help him last all 12 rounds and keep coming forward towards Martinez as it helped that kid John many years ago in junior high?
It could have, or Julio may be just having a bit of a drug problem where he can not seem to abstain from alcohol and drugs, even during training camps.
It is pretty clear that Chavez is a bit of a rockstar being the son of a legend and getting a lot of the perks and treatment that go with it, and now that he has a decent career of his own, but if he does not knock out his drug addiction, then he might really end his career before it really got respected by his critics.
Some of his possible fines include forfeiting his entire $3 million purse, as well as a one-year suspension. These are big ramifications that could seriously hurt, or even end one's fight career, especially coming off of the biggest fight of his life which solidified his own name.
One must also take into account that Chavez may get blocked from entering into the United States all together for a significant amount of time should this matter get even more serious.
If Julio ever wants to be taken seriously in the sport of boxing, then he must drop the rockstar lifestyle at once, and that definitely includes the partying with alcohol and drugs.
Either that, or he can also try acting with Lindsay Lohan and Amanda Bynes.
