After Sergio Martinez was victorious via unanimous decision over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Saturday night in Las Vegas, the two fighters and promoters of the bout had plenty to say at the post-fight press conference.
Before the fighters took to the podium to answer the media's questions, the possibility of a rematch got a boost with Top Rank's Bob Arum saying that Dallas Cowboys owner, Jerry Jones, told him he wants the possible rematch to be held in Cowboys Stadium.
Chavez Jr., who almost stole the fight with a final-round surge that included a knockdown of Martinez, said he should have listened to his corner earlier in the fight.
"The corner was right. They were telling me to throw, but I was not throwing."
When asked if Martinez's speed what was giving Chavez Jr. the most problems in the fight he said, "The speed was not a problem. It was his style more than anything. I couldn't get to him."
In addition to the style difficulties, Chavez Jr. didn't mount any real kind of offensive surge until late in the fight, and it was a huge factor to the decision being so lopsided in the end.
Chavez Jr. said, "I think that I started very late, and I gave away too many rounds and that's why I lost the fight."
Martinez took the podium after Chavez Jr. and was asked if throwing the "one-two" was all he needed to do to win the fight.
"Well it looked like it worked out, because I won 11 out of the 12 rounds," Martinez said.
Martinez was questioned if anything in a rematch would be different and if he would rather have a fight with the widely considered No. 1 pound-for-pound boxer, Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Martinez dodged truly answering the question, saying he was going to take time off before making any decisions.
Promoter, Lou DiBella jumped in and said, "If Floyd Mayweather's people want to talk to me, he'll be on vacation, they can talk to me."
Taking a shot at Chavez Jr., Martinez went on to say he would take on any fighter and would not duck anyone.
"The difference in this new champion is that I will fight and I will defend my title against anyone that is in front of me. I will not choose and pick anyone, I will fight anyone."
