Povetkin vs Rahman: Alexander Povetkin Defeats Hasim Rahman Via TKO
Sep 29th 2012, 23:09

Alexander Povetkin successfully defended his WBA Heavyweight title against Hasim Rahman with an emphatic second round TKO victory.

Povetkin remains undefeated with the victory at 25-0 and the stoppage was his 17th in his career. Rahman suffered the eighth loss of his career; his record now sits at 50-8-2.

This result shocks no one as the dominant Russian was fully expected to dominate Rahman and retain his championship. This matchup was never equal to begin with as the 39-year-old Rahman's age immediately shined through in the lopsided affair.

Rahman is best known for his extremely short-lived title reign in 2001 when he stunned Lennox Lewis in a fifth round knockout victory before suffering a knockout loss to Lewis just seven months later.

While Rahman does have some name recognition, his days of being relevant in the heavyweight division are long past. Before the knockout loss to Povetkin, he had last challenged for a title in 2008 when he was dominated in similar fashion by Wladimir Klitschko.

The win marks the second title defense of the year for Povetkin who is one of the few remaining elite heavyweights in the sport. Povetkin had defended his title in February of this year against Marco Huck in a bout that went to Povetkin in a majority decision.

With Rahman now out of the way, fans can hope that the WBA is able to find a more relevant challenger for Povetkin's title, as Rahman failed to be competitive at any point in this lopsided affair.
