For God's sake Erik Morales, please hang up the gloves for good. It's bad enough to see a legend fight and lose past his prime, but to watch him get spun around like a top is too much to bear.
In case you missed it, Morales was knocked for a loop with this hard left hand from Danny Garcia in the fourth round of their senseless rematch on Saturday night. Morales looked old, slow and flabby from the start. Garcia provided the abrupt and brutal ending.
Here is the punch, it happens at the :10 mark of the video:
I have called the left hook Garcia landed on Amir Khan a blind punch. There was nothing blind about this punch from Swift. It was a textbook shot that would never have caught a younger Morales. As soon as Morales stopped his cyclone, and his trainers rushed into the ring to ensure the stoppage of the fight, I turned to my son and said: "this is what happens when great fighters fight too long."
Morales had already been given a warning shot from the sport in 2007. He had lost his fourth fight in a row after a decision to David Diaz. It was his fifth loss in a six fight stretch. That was the time to retire. Morales did walk away, but like many champions before him, he felt the need to try his hand at the sport he loved again.
He has had some success since his return to the ring in 2010, but he never looked anywhere close to the man I consider one of the best fighters in the last 25 years.
There was insult added to injury when Morales allegedly failed a drug test prior to the fight, per Fox News Latino. This was just an all around bad weekend for Morales.
Hopefully, he'll decide to walk away and ultimately take his place in the boxing hall of fame in the near future. He deserves that honor.
He doesn't deserve to take this type of beating ever again.
