While another showdown between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez will be the same old song and dance, a win for Pac-Man would be huge for the sport of boxing.
These two fighters have already squared off three times, so there aren't any new expectations in this bout. Pac-Man has beaten Marquez twice in the trilogy, with one match ending in a draw.
But if Pacquiao can once again get past Marquez, it will lead to quite the intriguing fight down the road.
According to Houston Mitchell of the Los Angeles Times, Pacquiao will most likely go into battle against the winner of the Brandon Rios-Mike Alvarado fight.
Boxing promoter Bob Arum and superstar fighter Manny Pacquiao will keep a close eye on Saturday's scheduled fight between Brandon Rios and Mike Alvarado. Why? Pacquiao will more than likely fight the winner.
Per the same report by Mitchell, speaking to boxingscene.com, promoter Bob Arum explained why a fight with either would be an exciting matchup.
The public will go crazy for that fight. Imagine Manny against either of these animals. ... Manny will have to become an 'animal' himself. Absolutely. These guys will make him an animal.
Both Rios and Alvarado are widely held as two of the more entertaining fighters to watch in the sport. These two fighters are straight brawlers, bringing relentless punches, power and quickness to the ring every time they fight.
Before either even gets a shot at Pacquiao, the fight between Rios and Alvarado could become an instant classic in and of itself.
But putting Pacquiao in the ring with either of these fighters would certainly create a buzz around the sport.
Pacquiao is also a brawler much like his potential counterparts. That will ensure that no matter who Pac-Man faces, he will be involved in a fight with a ton of punches and action to boot.
An exciting fight between Pacquiao and either Rios or Alvarado is exactly what boxing needs.
The memory of Pac-Man's controversial loss to Timothy Bradley is still fresh in the minds of fans around the globe. But creating a new, exciting rivalry between Pacquiao and another top fighter could help remove the sour taste boxing fans still have in their collective mouths.
Not to mention, the more Pacquiao wins, the closer he is to revenging his loss to Bradley, which is something that must happen for the sport to fully recover from the June debacle.
