College football fans were up in arms when last year's national championship game was a rematch between Alabama and LSU.
Sportswriters and Twitter analysts alike constantly utilize the cliche, "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results," every time they want to see a trend change in sports.
So why in the hell is anyone excited for a fourth fight between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez?
I know what proponents of the fight will say: Tim, bro, all three of the fights between them were close and highly competitive bouts. Heck, many people thought Marquez won the third fight even though it was given to Pacquiao on the cards. This is going to be a great fight.
First of all, I'm not your bro, bro. Secondly, I concede both of those points. All three fights have been competitive. I wouldn't have lost any sleep if Marquez was given a decision in the third fight. It might even be another solid fight.
But who cares?
Wouldn't you rather see Pacquiao fight somebody different at this point? Even if it isn't Mayweather, wouldn't you like some variety? Does it really matter what happens in this fight, since Pacquiao has already won the series?
To be honest, for Pacman, all I see is risk in this fight. If he wins, big deal; he'll have beaten Marquez for a third time. I don't think anyone is going to toss confetti at his feet for doing something he's already accomplished.
But if he loses, his legacy is safe, but his leverage in negotiating a fight with Mayweather takes yet another hit. You don't go into a potential fight with Mayweather on the heels of two losses and expect to get a favorable percentage of the money.
When will boxing fans stop buying the pay-per-views of less intriguing fights and demand, through their wallets, that Mayweather and Pacquiao fight one another? Every time you buy a card headlined with Pacquiao-Marquez or some less intriguing fight, you are making it lucrative for Mayweather and Pacman to duck one another.
But I don't need the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight. Frankly, I'm over it. All I want is some variety in the sport. I want to see Pacman fight an exciting up-and-comer, not take on Marquez for a fourth time. I find the whole thing to be stale.
That's just me. Some of you, I'm sure, are excited for the fourth edition of this rivalry.
Just don't expect different results. We all know what they say about that.
