Saturday night, live from Atlantic City, New Jersey, former WBO super featherweight champ Adrien Broner will take on the tough WBC Lightweight champion Antonio DeMarco. I'll actually be in attendance for this one and it looks, at least on paper, like it's going to be a terrific matchup.
So, who's got the upper hand, and how will the fight ultimately play out?
We'll start with Adrien Broner. He's undefeated, has all the talent in the world and looks like he could be a future star. He fights behind a Philly shell defense, making him very difficult to hit with multiple clean punches due to his upper body movement.
Broner also has extremely quick hand and foot speed, and his wide stance allows him to generate a lot of power. I like to think of him as a budding Floyd Mayweather that can really punch. Broner is actually very exciting for a fighter that has such a good defense.
If Broner can control the fight and stay in the center of the ring, he'll pick DeMarco apart and win an easy decision or via late KO.
For DeMarco, it's going to be a tough night any way you slice it. He's very tall for a lightweight at 5'10" which will be key in the fight if he wants to pull off the upset. He'll need to use his size advantage to bully Broner around the ring and force him to the ropes.
DeMarco has very good power and is a tough pressure fighter, which is something Broner isn't really all that used to. If DeMarco can force Broner back and make him fight off the back foot, it could give Broner some problems.
So the question now is who's going to win? I'm going to roll with Adrien "The Problem" Broner on this one in a tough, but clear decision. Call it eight rounds to four. DeMarco's going to really test Broner, but Broner's just too skilled and too fast.
Also, heavyweight contender Seth Mitchell matches up against the tough Jonathan Banks in the main undercard bout. It should be a solid fight as Mitchell is always entertaining. Look for Mitchell to score a knockout in the middle rounds.
