Shortly after beating Andre Berto via unanimous decision this past Saturday, WBC interim welterweight champion Robert Guerrero called out Floyd Mayweather Jr., and according to Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schafer in an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Guerrero just might land the biggest fight of his career in 2013.
Schafer told the Times, "Interest is there. It’s a process, one that has begun … I have a site and date in mind, but those conversations are best served now to take place behind closed doors."
The Guerrero-Berto clash was thought to have big-time implications as far as the welterweight division goes, and the win could lead Guerrero to the fight with the 43-0 Mayweather that could make or break his career.
Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KOs) showed that he was a firm challenger for anyone in the 147-pound division—including Mayweather—when he imposed his will on Berto, resulting in a heavily one-sided affair, which left Berto with one of the most disturbing post-fight faces in recent memory.
Not only did Guerrero land at will on Berto, he also took some tremendous shots of his own, displaying a very strong chin in the process.
Although the words didn't come out of Mayweather's mouth, the fact that we are hearing something regarding Mayweather's future in the ring are a good sign that we will see him fight in 2013.
Since being released from the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada in early August, any talk about Mayweather's return to the ring has been almost non-existent.
Now that Guerrero has proven he is one of the best options out there for Mayweather in his return to boxing one could only hope the bout is made.
Guerrero would offer a stiff challenge for Mayweather, one that could end up tarnishing his perfect 43-0 record as well.
