It's been quite a fun weekend for followers of former business partners, undefeated boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr, and rap-star Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson.
The two have engaged in a series of insults, counter-insults and general hilarity towards each other since 50 Cent announced last week on his Twitter that he was ending his association with The Money Team, the promotional venture formed by both men.
In his latest salvo, Mayweather took direct aim at the career of his former partner:
Men lie.. women lie numbers don't lie. Wayne, Drake, Rick Ross, Kanye please help this boy twitter.com/FloydMayweathe…
— Floyd Mayweather (@FloydMayweather) November 3, 2012
The tweet also contained a chart, showing 50 Cent's declining album sales in recent years. It was a direct swipe at something Floyd is known to care a lot about—the ability to make money.
It came as a follow-up to another tweet, referring to his former partner as a "male boxing groupie" and showing a picture of 50 Cent holding several of Mayweather's many boxing championship belts:
A male boxing groupie.. hold my belts because your album sales have declined instagr.am/p/Rjhoa1R3Vb/

Not to be outdone, and seemingly stung by the insinuation he's a has-been, 50 Cent didn't wait long to reply:
MONEY Floyd you know I have more MONEY then you.Al Haymen got you on a Allowance, you go broke every fight stupid. SMSaudio

The war of words seems to be escalating and shows no sign of stopping. And for those of us boxing fans who enjoy laughing, let's hope it doesn't.
There are some who have speculated, with some merit, that the Twitter war is nothing more than a publicity stunt by two business-savvy men who know how to use social media to promote.
This is quite possible, especially given 50 Cent seems to be marketing his own fighter, undefeated Cuban prospect, Yuriorkis Gamboa, for a shot against Floyd:
GAMBOA IS MAD FLOYD. He gonna beat ya ass man. He moving up in weight. SMSaudio

But given the personal nature of the attacks, I'm not sure I buy into the publicity stunt angle. There seems to be some genuine animosity here.
Either way, I hope it continues. It's a great laugh and broke up the monotony of an underwhelming boxing weekend.
Keep it up guys!
Round two, fight!
