Pound-for-pound king and welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather will return to the ring against newly crowned WBC welterweight titleholder Robert Guerrero on May 4, according to many reports.
While this isn't the sexy bout that many fans are clamoring for, it is a set up for a possible showdown of Mayweather against Mexican superstar Saul Alvarez on Mexican Independence Day weekend.
While there are many looking forward to a Alvarez fight with Mayweather, one has to wonder, could Guerrero, nicknamed the Ghost, ruin that possibility?
Guerrero has qualities that many of Mayweather’s past opponents haven’t had, with his heart and power to deal with the speed and skills of Mayweather. His November performance against former world champion Andre Berto has many fans thinking that Mayweather's 43-0 record might turn into 43-1.
Guerrero's only defeat was a 2005 disputed loss against Gamaliel Diaz, while Guerrero was still a featherweight. Since, Guerrero has defeated great opposition, such as Berto, Joel Casamayor, current Featherweight titleholder Orlando Salido and blood-and-guts fighter Michael Katsidis.
There’s no questioning whether Mayweather is the best in the world. However, Juan Manuel Marquez is the only quality opponent he has faced in his prime since 2005. Mayweather has had huge fights versus De La Hoya, Mosley, Judah and Cotto. While they are definitely hall of fame quality fighters, none were in the distinct prime of their careers.
He is not Manny Pacquiao or Sergio Martinez, but we cannot discredit the skills of the Ghost. Mainstream America doesn’t know who he is or what he brings to the table. But to say that he has no shot of beating Mayweather is absurd.
There will be many predictions leading up to fight night, but this fight will be interesting. If Mayweather wins, many will feel as though he didn’t have a quality opponent to fight. If Guerrero wins, people will say Mayweather is over the hill. Regardless, May 4 will be an interesting evening.
