Juan Manuel Marquez is the best choice for Manny Pacquiao to fight right now because he’s the biggest draw and will put on the best show.
The boxing community knows what it will get with these two lightweight brawlers squaring off against one another.
Marquez has been waiting since last year for a chance to get back into the ring with Pac-Man. He’s pretty confident that he will come out on top; after all, he has in the past.
"I beat him the first three fights but did not get the decision; this time I will beat him again and I also will get the victory officially. It's an election year and I am going to win by a landslide,” Marquez said, according to a press release (via BoxingScene.com).
Let’s take a look at some contributing factors that explain why Dinamita is next up for Pacquiao.
Too Close to Call
The previous three fights in this rivalry have all come down to close decisions. Dinamita thinks he’s been the winner and the Filipino congressman thinks he’s won.
That’s how close the last two fights have been between the two, both Pacquiao victories. The first bout ended in a split decision draw.
That uncertainty has helped fuel speculation as to who will come out on top the fourth time around.
People want to see one last bout to see if one of these two great fighters can figure the other out and make a definitive statement, once and for all.
Road to Redemption
Marquez has been redeeming himself throughout his career. His first professional fight was a loss, so he’s had to deal with adversity since the beginning.
Since then, he’s been a dominant figure in the boxing world. Dinamita’s 54-6-1 record includes just three losses that were not his first fight or at the hands of Pacquiao.
His only fight since he last stepped into the ring with Pac-Man was a WBO lightweight championship-winning bout against Serhiy Fedchenko (30-1-0).
Winning that belt in the interim certainly didn’t hurt his chances and marketability for a rematch with Pacquiao.
Draw Power
Pacquiao’s options for a fight were limited due to complications with Miguel Cotto, Floyd Mayweather’s recent prison stint as well as the poor draw power of a possible rematch against Timothy Bradley.
The last Pacquiao-Marquez fight sold 1.3 million pay-per-views compared to only 900,000 for Pacquiao-Bradley
So it was a no-brainer for fight promoters. The intrigue of a fourth and final fight of this series will spark much more interest than any other option.
Marquez earned it by being marketable and by consistently fighting Pacquiao so closely in the past.
