After finally vanquishing his longtime rival, Juan Manuel Marquez should at last hang up his well-worn gloves.
It took four fights, but Dinamita was finally able to score a victory over Manny Pacquiao, and this time the outcome didn’t fall into the judges’ hands. The 39-year-old delivered a decimating counter-punch that knocked Pac-Man out cold and decided the fight in the sixth round.
Instead of becoming yet another great fighter that goes on to box well past his prime, Marquez would be wise to call it quits after accomplishing the greatest feat of his career.
While we don’t doubt that the Mexican has plenty of rounds left in him, there is simply no way he’s going to top what happened this past Saturday night.
The feud between the Filipino and Marquez started back in 2004, when the two battled to a tough draw. After that, Pac-Man scored two highly controversial decisions before Marquez finally got in the win column this weekend.
Pacquiao may have a leg up in the record books, but Marquez will always be remembered for his decisive knockout that proved once and for all who won the rivalry between the two.
Of course, Marquez does have some unfinished business with the undefeated Floyd “Money” Mayweather, who won a unanimous decision back in 2009. However, it’s probably best to leave that alone.
Mayweather has established himself as the best fighter of this generation with a sterling 43-0-0 record and continues to dominate at the ripe age of 35. Marquez would have his hands full trying to get ready for Money, who has a completely different style to the aggressive Pacquiao.
It took Dinamita four attempts before scoring the KO on Pac-Man, and we truly believe it would take twice that many before he earned one on Money.
Aside from settling the score with Mayweather, there is no one worthy of battling Marquez. His recent feat would only be diminished by the sands of time if he doesn’t retire while he’s on top.
