On Saturday night, live from the Madison Square Garden theater, WBA Middleweight champ Gennady Golovkin will take on tough Philadelphia native Gabriel Rosado.
It promises to be an exciting fight, and is a great way to kick off 2013.
Golovkin, or GGG as he's known to his fans, is thought by some to be a future top pound-for-pound fighter. He possesses concussive, almost superhuman knockout power and is an extremely polished fighter with an extensive amateur background.
There aren't many glaring weaknesses in his game. He fights at a measured pace, doesn't waste punches and is very well-conditioned. As always, he's going to be well prepared come Saturday night.
In this fight, he just needs to stay within himself and fight under control at the pace he wants to keep. GGG is the superior fighter here, and as long as he boxes and sets up his shots, he should get the win.
If he's able to land his power shots early and often, this could be a quick one.
GGG has a reputation of being feared in gyms, with sparring partners turning down big paydays to go rounds with him. He says in this video that he has to take it easy on his sparring partners in order to get work in.
It's likely everyone will see why on Saturday night.
For Rosado, his best chance will be to lure GGG into a brawl where they can exchange punches. Rosado is a versatile fighter, but he's not going to be able to win if it's a boxing match. He needs to make it a fight and punch with GGG, trying to catch him between punches.
He doesn't have as much power as GGG, but he's a good enough puncher to hurt him if he can land the right shot. He'll have to fight a perfect fight and get a little bit lucky if he wants to dethrone the champ.
Rosado is no doubt a tough guy, and he's going to make it a fight.
However, at the end of the day, GGG is just too skilled and too talented and should win in impressive fashion, probably by KO in the middle rounds.
Either way, it's going to be an excellent fight, and fight fans should be sure to tune in.
