According to ESPN's Dan Rafael, former Middleweight World champion Kelly Pavlik has called it quits on his boxing career at the age of 30. Pavlik was scheduled to face Andre Ward this year and was four fights into a comeback that had looked promising up to this point.
Pavlik was also working with a new trainer Robert Garcia, regarded as one of the finest in the sport. He appeared to be improving under the tutelage of Garcia, making this announcement even more surprising.
Pavlik has struggled with alcohol addiction, which may or may not have been a factor in his choosing to walk away at such a young age. Pavlik will be remembered as a tough fighter with great power that was never afraid to mix it up.
He defeated former champion Jermain Taylor twice and gave current Middleweight champ Sergio Martinez a heck of a fight in 2010. Pavlik did make a lot of money in his career, so that's likely a contributing influence on his decision to hang em' up.
Either way, Pavlik has walked away with his faculties intact, so we'll wish him the best of luck in his retirement.
