Saul "Canelo" Alvarez is on the verge of the biggest fight of his life—a fight against pound-for-pound kingpin Floyd Mayweather.
According to Alvarez's manager, Chepo Reynoso, via BoxingScene.com, Alvarez and Golden Boy Promotions expect an agreement to be reached for the two to fight sometime in September 2013:
[Vice President] Eric Gomez of Golden Boy Promotions came to Guadalajara and we agreed that Saul and Floyd would share the evening in May. We already reached a financial agreement [for May], and a guarantee we will face [Mayweather] in September in Las Vegas.
Mayweather's opponent for the May 4 bout has yet to be officially announced, but the report speculates that it will be Robert Guerrero. Alvarez will also fight on the May 4 card against an opponent yet to be named, although the report mentions Austin Trout as a possibility.
While the May show featuring Alvarez and Mayweather is sure to draw big numbers and plenty of attention, fans have to be even more excited about the potential superfight in September.
Mayweather, 35, is 43-0 in his career and widely regarded as the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world. While there aren't many in the sport that fans believe can beat him, Alvarez remains one of the most intriguing possibilities for the superstar.
Alvarez, 22, is 41-0-1 in his career and one of the fastest-rising stars in the sport. The news that these two undefeated fighters could very well be on a collision course is great for fans of big fights. Assuming they both avoid upsets in May, the young Alvarez will get his shot at one of the biggest draws in the sport.
