Men who believe they’re destined for greatness are dangerous.
Robert Guerrero believes God is on his side. Whether or not that is the case, Floyd Mayweather would be foolish to underestimate him.
Joseph Herron of EastsideBoxing.com reported that the sport may have just found its version of NFL quarterback Tim Tebow—only bolder. Guerrero recently said:
I truly believe that God is putting me in this position to humble everybody in the sport; especially the ones who like to talk and are so-called experts. Most critics seem to think that a win over Floyd Mayweather Jr. is impossible. If you put Christ first in your life, nothing is impossible. People will find out the truth very soon.
When a boxer who isn’t a household name is lucky enough to fight Mayweather, where do you honestly believe their priorities lie?
Money.
That isn’t a baffling concept. Fighting a legend like Money May changes a boxer’s life because the payday is so bountiful. Sure, an inferior boxer may compete to win, but it’s safe to say that the majority of those who have fought Mayweather over the past decade knew in the back of their minds that—there’s no way around it—they were a long shot to shock the world.
Guerrero is different.
It sounds like he sincerely believes he not only has a chance to knock off the undefeated Mayweather, but that the odds are in his favor.
Edward Chaykovsky of BoxingScene.com reported that Floyd Mayweather Sr. believes Guerrero will indeed be his son’s next opponent, but he wrote him off: “Little Floyd is too smart for him. Anyway you want to look at it, Floyd is too smart for him.”
Ironically, the most unintelligent thing the Mayweathers could do before facing Guerrero is doubt him because of a supposed edge in intelligence. After all, the underdog’s mentality is his greatest strength.
Confidence is everything in competition.
When a competitor casts aside all doubt and fear of failure, that competitor becomes capable of accomplishing extraordinary things. When a human being puts his or her faith in a higher power—something greater than his or herself—that human being is often able to overachieve beyond the norm.
That higher power doesn’t have to influence an outcome via divine intervention to give an athlete an advantage. Guerrero believes God is on his side, so he’s going to fight his next opponent like God is on his side—with the utmost confidence.
Guerrero isn’t just reaching for any assurance-builder he can get his hands on before the fight of his life. His faith is fueled by his wife’s heroic effort to escape death. He explained (via EastsideBoxing.com):
I’ve seen my wife battle and overcome cancer. She was about to die…and leaving our dilemma in God’s hands is what truly got us through it and God’s grace continues to get us through everything. I’ve seen God perform miracles in my life and he’s not finished yet.
Mayweather is more talented than Guerrero, but if the undefeated champion sleeps on the challenger, he’s in for a rude awakening.
The Ghost believes he’s working hand in hand with the Holy Ghost and because of that, he had more than money on the mind when he called out Mayweather for a May 4 bout.
