After 14 months, Lamont Peterson will get back into the ring to defend his title against Kendall Holt. According to ESPN, Peterson and Holt will fight for the Junior Welterweight title as the main event on Feb. 22nd during Friday Night Fights on ESPN2.The location for the fight is the Washington D.C. Armory, where Peterson lives.
Gary Shaw, Holt's promoter, broke the news to ESPN and discussed his views on the fight:
"I think it's a wonderful fight for Kendall. These are two fighters who are both going to come to win. I don't think the fight is going to go to a decision. Kendall can really punch. I've always believed he was the biggest puncher in the 140-pound division. And I have a lot of respect for Lamont Peterson. Look what he did to khan. At the end of the day, he won the fight. Stylistically, I think it will be a terrific fight. Neither guy will back down from each other."
Peterson hasn't fought since beating Amir Khan in a controversial fight on Dec. 10, 2011. Peterson was awarded victory in a split decision.
Following the fight, Peterson has been wrapped around even more controversy. Peterson was supposed to fight Khan in a rematch, but a failed drug test for synthetic testosterone forced the fight to be cancelled.
The cloud of controversy surrounding Peterson over the last year and change makes this a must-win fight. A victory would start to close the door on his failed drug test and rebuild his tarnished name.
Peterson enters the fight with a 30-1-1 record with 15 KOs while Holt enters the ring at 28-5 with 16 KOs. Holt last fought on Mar. 15 when he beat Tim Coleman in the second round. Before that fight, Holt had lost three of his last five fights.
The fight is set-up to be a strong main event for Friday Night Fights assuming everything leading up the fight goes smoothly.
