This Saturday night, live from the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, WBC Lightweight champ Adrien Broner will take on former World Champion Gavin Rees. This fight pits the fast rising Broner against the wily veteran Rees, in what should be a solid fight for as long as it lasts.
So who's going to win?
Let's start with Gavin Rees. While I'm admittedly not too familiar with Rees' fighting abilities, from what I've seen Rees appears to be a pretty good fighter. His power isn't all that great, with only 18 KO's in 37 victories, but he's a good boxer with only one defeat on his record.
If Rees wants to have any chance to win this fight, and he's certainly facing an uphill battle in this one, he'll need to utilize the jab and control the pace.
As Adrien Broner showed in his last fight with the tough Antonio DeMarco, if you don't disrupt him and let him get into a rhythm and dictate the action, he'll systematically break you down round-by-round until you're finished. Broner's a master at taking advantage of his opponents mistakes.
Rees can't let that happen.
I was in person for his fight against DeMarco, and I can vouch that his speed and defensive abilities were truly something special, skills you don't ordinarily see. If Broner is himself in this match, meaning he fights with the shoulder roll and dictates the pace of the action, it'll be an easy night for him.
Broner has an extremely rare combination of speed and power. One fan remarked to me at the Broner-DeMarco fight that he's a combo of Floyd Mayweather and Roy Jones. While he doesn't have as much explosiveness as Jones, or quite as much polish as Mayweather, it's scary that it's still a somewhat valid comparison.
Expect Broner to get into a groove early on, break Rees down, and stop him in about six rounds. Rees is a good fighter, but Broner is on the cusp of being an elite fighter. Barring Rees fighting the best fight of his career and catching Broner with something big, it should be a routine night for the budding star.
It's going to be a great night for fight fans, so be sure to tune in.
