Floyd Mayweather Jr. has always had a big personality, but he's starting to get a little out of hand. Mayweather is in essence his own boss, a position he has abused lately with odd tweets about future fights and lawsuits coming seemingly out of nowhere. What we haven't heard much about is Mayweather actually focusing on boxing, which will haunt him in future fights.
First of all, let's go through Mayweather's past week, which was certainly newsworthy.
Tuesday saw Mayweather announce a likely fight between himself and Devon Alexander, tweeting:
The negotiations for my fight are almost done. The front runner is IBF Champion Devon Alexander. It’d be a unification bout at welterweight.
— Floyd Mayweather (@FloydMayweather) February 6, 2013
According to ESPN's Dan Rafael, the tweet caught the Alexander camp off-guard, as Alexander's trainer and manager Kevin Cunningham had no comment:
Devon is focused on getting his biceps 100 percent. That is all we are focused on.
Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions was also asked for comment, as he promotes both Alexander and Robert Guerrero, considered the front-runner to fight Mayweather prior to the tweet. Schaefer was caught off-guard as well, stating:
[The comment] came from Mayweather and not me, so I cannot comment on it. Last I checked I was working on rescheduling the [Alexander-Brook] fight.
Whether or not this fight will actually happen remains to be seen, but the uncertainty surrounding it is certainly troubling. At least this media circus actually has something to do with boxing, though.
Mayweather has also filed a lawsuit regarding a club in New Orleans in a story that is as baffling as it is irrelevant to Mayweather's boxing career. TMZ reports that a New Orleans wine bar is being sued by Mayweather for using his image in promoting material, writing:
But here's the deal ... Floyd says he never agreed to appear at The Wine Bistro -- nor did The Money Team -- and the bar went crazy advertising on Facebook, YouTube and flyers. Floyd is pissed that the bar profited off his name and worries his fans will be pissed because he was a no-show.
This actually sounds like Mayweather has a case. That having been said, Mayweather is preparing for a fight on May 4, 2013, and he has not had a real bout since May 5, 2012. That will be almost a full year since his last fight. Maybe Mayweather should focus on training and shaking off the rust, rather than suing an unknown wine bar in New Orleans.
Things like this are the reason most athletes have powerful agents and promoters. They take care of things like money, lawsuits and other distractions so that the athlete can focus on training.
Mayweather likes to call all the shots, meaning his main focus over the next few months will more likely be lawsuits and promoting rather than training. That means if he fights any competent fighter, Mayweather stands a very real chance of getting rocked.
He's going to be 36 years old by the time of the fight, and his focus is on everything but boxing. Mayweather needs to get his head on straight or his undefeated record may fall in May.
