Floyd Mayweather: Bout with Saul Alvarez Would Make Up for Pacquiao Debacle
Feb 14th 2013, 03:20

Floyd Mayweather Jr. already has his next bout set up against Robert Guerrero, but a bout with Saul Alvarez will be necessary for the boxing legend to make up for his inability to make a fight with Manny Pacquiao happen.

Mayweather and Alvarez will both fight on the same May 4 card, but they will do so in separate fights. Money May will take on Guerrero in that pay-per-view event, while Alvarez has yet to choose his opponent.

However, Alvarez could be destined to fight Austin Trout because Canelo had planned on fighting Miguel Cotto before Cotto's loss to Trout.

Whatever the case may be, a fight between Alvarez and Mayweather would be the biggest bout boxing could hope for. If both are victorious on May 4, then there's no reason why this fight shouldn't happen.

You already know about Mayweather: He's one of the greatest fighters every to grace a boxing ring, and his 43-0 record proves that. Mayweather routinely disposes of his opponents in an uneventful fashion with technical abilities that are matched by none.

Alvarez is a rising star in the sport with a 41-0-1 record. After defeating Shane Mosley handily, Canelo went on to beat Josesito Lopez with a TKO in the fifth round. His impressive resume has no doubt earned him the right to take a crack at Money May.

And, of course, the link between these two is that both are champions.

The dream bout between Pacquiao and Mayweather seems to be just that: a dream.

Several things have held this bout up in the past few years, and considering Pacquiao has lost his past two fights, I'm sure Money May isn't any more keen on facing Pac-Man at this point.

That is no doubt a huge blow to boxing in every way.

A Mayweather-Pacquiao bout was all fans really wanted to see, but with it seeming more impossible by the day, the only dream bout that's left is between Alvarez and Mayweather, who are two of the greatest fighters today.

An impressive win for both in May will have fans clamoring for such a contest. Mayweather might have angered fans in the past with his antics in regard to a Pacquiao fight, but taking a match with Canelo will help change that.
