Floyd Mayweather's Possible Bout with Devon Alexander Won't Interest Fans Feb 8th 2013, 15:04 Floyd Mayweather is gearing up for his first fight in nearly a year at the MGM Grand on May 4, but he won't be fighting who we all want him to. While boxing fans want to see Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao square off in the ring, Mayweather tweeted out a different opponent's name on Wednesday: You may be thinking, "Who?" Alexander is the current IBF welterweight titlist, owning a 24-1 career record to go with 13 KOs. Here's some footage of Alexander's victory over Andreas Kotelnik: The 25-year-old Alexander was slated to defend his title against Kell Brook in less than two weeks, but Alexander was forced to pull out of the fight due to a strained biceps, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN. That means that if Mayweather and Alexander were to go toe-to-toe in May, Alexander would spend much of the promotion time nursing the injury as he prepared for the fight. This makes it difficult for promoters to endorse the fight and for fans to get into it. While there's no evidence that this fight is going down other than Mayweather's tweet, it still doesn't do justice to the fact that the boxing realm wants to see Mayweather vs. Pacquiao. It doesn't matter how Pacquiao performed against Juan Manuel Marquez or if you think Mayweather will absolutely destroy Pac-Man—it needs to happen. Boxing fans have been put through the ringer in hopes of seeing these two boxing legends go at each other, and while they're both still actively fighting, the fans should be rewarded. According to Richard Schaefer (via ESPN), who promotes both Mayweather and Alexander, the promoter is still working on getting Alexander's bout with Brook rescheduled. Rafael notes that the IBF likely won't allow this fight to happen, since "Alexander's fight with Brook is a mandatory defense that is already under contract," but it doesn't change the fact that Pacquiao isn't even being linked to a Mayweather fight.  Alexander is no slouch, but Pacquiao is a much more enticing and intriguing matchup for Mayweather.
