The WBC Welterweight title bout between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Robert Guerrero isn't slated to go down until May 4 at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. As might be expected, though, that hasn't stopped Mayweather from stirring the pot already.
Showtime Sports provides a look behind the scenes as the two fighters prepare for the marquee fight, and promoted this video as the two's first encounter ever. They will star in the docu-series launched by the cable network, which will premier in April.
This showdown will mark nearly a year to the day that Mayweather last took the ring in a 12-round, unanimous decision over Miguel Cotto. He is 43-0 in his illustrious career. Chief among the criticisms Mayweather leveled at Guerrero were the lack of quality opponents that he has faced.
Despite Mayweather's best efforts to get under Guerrero's skin, the 29-year-old underdog remained calm and composed even in the up close and personal encounters with one of the greatest boxers ever.
Guerrero—who boasts an impressive career record of 31-1-1 himself, including 18 knockouts—indicated that he would have started swinging at Mayweather if he truly were rattled. That certainly would have been something to see.
The two will trade blows in Vegas eventually, but until then, this type of accessibility will only heighten the hype around the fight.
Money is looking to make a triumphant return to the ring after being on a brief hiatus from boxing, and promoting the fight in this fashion with his trash-talking mannerisms will definitely help.
His absence was due to serving a two-month sentence as part of a domestic battery case. Mayweather was released from prison in August.
