Showtime got some effortless publicity for the first bout they will air featuring pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather and his opponent Robert Guerrero as the two fighters got into a heated trash-talk session at a commercial shoot.
At what appears to be a set for promotional spot that will hype the Mayweather-Guerrero bout on Showtime pay-per-view up, Mayweather was his usual self: disrespecting his opponent and trying to get into his head.
Although Guerrero suggests that nothing Mayweather (43-0, 26 KOs) said got to him, it appears at times in the video Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KOs) is lost for words, creating the feeling that he might have been intimidated at least the slightest bit.
With two months left until the May 4 showdown, it is clear that Mayweather is in better fighting shape than Guerrero based on their appearances in the video, which shouldn't be a surprise, as Mayweather is known for staying in tip-top shape year-round.
Guerrero's body looked soft, and if he doesn't tighten up his midsection, Mayweather can use that to his advantage by going to the body early, opening up Guerrero's head and slowing him down if the fight advances to the latter rounds.
Beaming with confidence, Guerrero seems as sure as anyone that he can beat Mayweather, but as we have seen in the past, all the opponents that have sworn to hand Mayweather his first loss have failed.
Although this whole video clip may be just a publicity stunt to get the buzz around the bout to grow as it approaches, it seems clear that Mayweather and Guerrero don't like each other. The bad blood began on Twitter and spilled over into the commercial shoot. If the beef between the two is real, then the two fighters could set the viewers of the bout up for a war in the ring.
In Mayweather’s last bout with Miguel Cotto in May of 2012, he said he would go toe-to-toe and Mayweather made good on his promise giving the fans a very entertaining fight. Mayweather showed he is not afraid to take a punch to give a punch, despite having a superior defensive skill set.
Mayweather walked away the victor that night but also showed the most damage he has ever shown post-fight on his face.
Guerrero told Mayweather that he wants to go toe-to-toe in the bout when asked by the five-division world champ how he wants the fight to go. If Mayweather opts for another toe-to-toe bout, it gives Guerrero a better shot at pulling the upset, but Mayweather would be wise to come in defensive-minded, picking his spots to open up on Guerrero.
In all, this is a great way to get the publicity train rolling for what is sure to be yet another PPV success and displays that Showtime is ready to take over HBO’s reign as the king of televised boxing.
