3 Reasons Robert Guerrero Can Beat Floyd Mayweather
Apr 29th 2013, 16:49

This Saturday, one of the year's most anticipated bouts will take place as defending WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather returns to the ring to face Robert Guerrero.

Most experts believe that Mayweather is the favorite, but there is a sizable minority that believe Guerrero can shock the world on May 4.

There are a variety of reasons that Guerrero stands a chance in the ring against Mayweather. Guerrero is six years Mayweather's junior, he doesn't have the type of distractions that Mayweather has and he's a tough fighter that matches up well with Mayweather.

1. Guerrero is 30, Mayweather is 36

When the fight rolls around on Saturday, it will have been one year minus a day since Mayweather last fought in the ring. That was his super welterweight fight against Miguel Cotto, a fight he won unanimously to improve his record to 43-0.

Since then, Mayweather has served time in jail and has aged a year. Time catches up to everyone, so it is easy to speculate that maybe a year away from the sport took some of Mayweather's abilities.

On the flip side, Guerrero is just 30 years old and in the prime of his career. Three of his last four fights were for titles, all of which he won.

Guerrero is a great pound-for-pound fighter, according to Briggs Seekins of Bleacher Report. Being a younger fighter certainly enhances the qualities that make a great pound-for-pound fighter, including endurance and speed.

So certainly, being a younger fighter that isn't as removed from the sport as Mayweather is a big advantage that Guerrero has in his favor.

2. There aren't as many distractions for Guerrero

The persona that accompanies "Money" Mayweather simply doesn't apply to Guerrero. And the challenger could use that to his advantage.

While Mayweather is busy being a showman who has a special on prime time on CBS, Guerrero can just focus on his training and getting his mind right.

It's not just the prime-time specials, either. Last November, his professional relationship with rapper 50 Cent, with whom he started TMT Promotions, ended. According to King J on Bleacher Report, Mayweather also posted insulting Instagram pictures regarding his relationship with 50 Cent.

Guerrero simply doesn't have the type of distractions that Mayweather does. That allows Guerrero to put all his energy into training for the biggest fight of his life, and that's something that Mayweather simply can't do.

3. Guerrero is inspired and matches up well with Mayweather

Both Mayweather and Guerrero are excellent fighters that match up similarly.

They're both considered two of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the sport. Guerrero is tenacious and has the ability to go the distance with the champ.

Guerrero is undoubtedly one of the top talents in this sport, that's why he got the draw with Mayweather.

He's also one of the most inspired fighters out there. He resumed his career last year after his wife battled cancer. Since then, he hasn't lost.

Mayweather certainly has something to prove too. It's his first fight after his stint in jail, so he'll look to prove doubters wrong by showing he still has the talent of an undefeated champion.

In the end, the two are very similar boxers. Guerrero has great endurance and conditioning. He throws a lot of punches in a fight as well, which is something that an older Mayweather may have trouble dealing with.

If Guerrero wants to win, he'll have to control the pace of the fight with his speed, power and endurance.
