Floyd Mayweather: What Money Must Do to Avoid Upset Against Robert Guerrero
Apr 8th 2013, 23:08

Floyd Mayweather is not the unbeatable fighter he once was. His battered face following his last fight, against Miguel Cotto, tells us everything we need to know about that.

Money's impeccable defense has had him emerge from most fights unscathed. However, he took some big shots last time in the ring, and it was because the 36-year-old has lost just a bit from his elite quickness.

However, Money is still clearly a great fighter, and if he can execute the following three keys, he should win his May 4 bout at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, against Robert Guerrero with relative ease.

Don't Get Beat Up on the Ropes

Floyd Mayweather has increasingly gone to the ropes in his fights, and he's been supremely effective at it as he slides out of the way of punches.

However, Guerrero can do some damage when his opponent is on the ropes.

Guerrero easily handled Andre Berto in his last fight, and he inflicted a lot of damage when Berto was on the ropes. He was landing quality punches and was physically dominant.

Given this, Mayweather should not be as content to let this fight play out with him leaning on the ropes.

Which leads to our next key.

Stay on the Move

Money has tapered off his in-ring movement over the years. While he was never a fighter who relied heavily on his footwork, he does so even less now.

In place of this, Money has used movement at the waist to avoid punches and get in position for counter strikes.

He does not, and should not, completely abandon this. However, he should use his feet at the right time and not let Guerrero cut him off.

This will allow him to stay in control of the flow of the fight and keep Guerrero from gaining confidence.

Guerrero does not have the best footwork himself, and Floyd would be wise to exploit that.

Be on the Lookout for the Big Right Hook

If Floyd's defense has a hole, it is against the big right hook. There is no doubt that Guerrero will be looking to land a big blow with his right at every chance he gets.

Look for Guerrero to set this up with jabs to the body. Of course, this will leave him vulnerable to Floyd's elite counterattacks, and Money needs to make Guerrero pay when he does try to work the body.

This means a steady diet of uppercuts when Guerrero goes in for the attack.

Prediction

Mayweather by unanimous decision.

I expect a solid and smart effort from Guerrero, but I don't see him being able to inflict much damage on Money, and Floyd will pick him apart.
