Floyd “Money” Mayweather is great at a lot of things. It’s a good thing he has the talent in the ring to back up his mouth.
Boxing’s greatest pound-for-pound fighter has earned the right to do his share of talking. With a 43-0 record and a trail of big names left in his wake, Mayweather doesn’t have to worry about being called out for not walking the walk.
Money’s nickname is apropos. With the amount of divisiveness he stirs up with his trash talk, it’s no surprise his fights are among the most anticipated (and lucrative) of the year. Love him or hate him, he gets people talking.
When Mayweather steps into the ring with Robert Guerrero on May 4, a contingent of boxing fans will be watching for a chance to see a challenger finally silence the undefeated welterweight—never mind the possibility of seeing an end to Money’s spotless record. Until Mayweather loses, he’ll continue slinging trash talk with no reason to stop.

There have been some notable exchanges between the two fighters, one of the most recent involving Mayweather discussing Guerrero’s comments on his chances of beating him. As quoted by Mary Ann Owen of FightNews.com, Mayweather had some interesting words to describe his opponent:
A lot of times you see guys that are hypocrites. Like you got a guy who’s always preaching like he’s a preacher, like he loves God more than anyone else, and I feel that we’re all equal when it’s all said and done. You got this guy that’s going to the 700 Club, acting like he’s a pastor, but he got caught with a gun and he’s got Marilyn Monroe on his wall at his house, so like I said before, these guys are hypocrites. Like I said, you live, you learn, that’s not really my focus, you know what I’m saying? When a guy presents himself like Robert Guerrero was doing with myself. They were joking about me doing time. They say what goes around comes around, so a week after the fight it’s time for him to do his time.
Mayweather was docile with his tone but sharp with his words. As reserved as Guerrero tends to be outside the ropes, Money’s words still have to be a reason to stoke the 30-year-old’s competitive fire.
And then there’s this.
There’s no reason to read into any of the trash talk as anything more than publicity-building banter and par for the course for Mayweather. But the more the world’s greatest boxer talks, the more people will eventually want to see him eat his words.
And with all due respect to Guerrero, it will take a little extra intrigue to make this fight more appealing. Opinions vary on how ready Mayweather will be after a year away from the ring (and a stint behind bars), but there’s very little chance Guerrero comes away from this fight with an extra tally in the win column; the odds just aren’t in his favor.
But as we’ve seen so many times in the past, Mayweather has been his own greatest promoter for this fight. If all publicity is good publicity, fans have plenty of reason to shell out the cash for his May Day bout.
