Manny Pacquiao Would Be Making Mistake by Scheduling Fight with Mike Alvarado
Apr 18th 2013, 23:00

Manny Pacquiao has limited options for his next match. But fighting Mike Alvarado would be a poor decision.

Vic Lombardi of CBS Denver first reported news of the potential fight after talking to Alvarado's manager Henry Delgado:

While this bout has not been finalized, it appears likely to happen at this point. However, this is a mistake for Pacquiao.

From Alvarado's perspective, this match is as good as it gets. Any pay-per-view involving the Pac-man is certain to produce revenue beyond anything he has seen before.

The Colorado native is deserving of this opportunity as well after starting his career with a 34-1 record. He will likely set up a third fight against Brandon Rios at some point after the rivals split the first two matchups, but that can wait until after battling Pacquiao.

This will be a chance for Alvarado to move into the public spotlight after staying relatively anonymous for many years.

However, Pacquiao does not need this fight. He will be entering a no-win situation after losing his previous matchups against Timothy Bradley and Juan Manuel Marquez.

The Filipino boxer would not prove much by defeating the overmatched veteran—a victory is expected, and a loss would look even worse. The only thing that could come out of this is a nice payday, but that should not be too important for the second-richest athlete in the world, according to Forbes.

Instead, Pacquiao should hold out for one of three options.

He could finally set up the long-awaited matchup against Floyd Mayweather, although that seems less likely at this point. Otherwise, the only other bouts to help him would be rematches against either Marquez or Bradley.

By beating one of these opponents, he will avenge one of the poor losses over the past year and regain credibility in the boxing world. If he wants to retire on top, these wins would be vital.

Pacquiao has reached the point where his choice of opponents makes a huge difference for his legacy. He needs to make the right one to make sure he finishes his career strong.
