Floyd “Money” Mayweather will be back in the ring for the first time in a year when he squares off with Robert Guerrero in a May 4 fight being billed as “May Day.” Aptly named, one of the two will be going down in arguably the most appealing fight of the year.
While there has certainly been no shortage of big fights this year, any bout featuring Mayweather is a fight to watch—especially one against an aggressive fighter like Guerrero.

The 30-year-old southpaw presents an interesting (though not overwhelming) matchup for Mayweather. Guerrero is a high-volume striker with an aggressive streak that would typically play right into Money’s hands. A defensive wizard with as much boxing acumen as any fighter on the planet, Mayweather should have the opportunity to stick to his guns and execute his usual game plan.
There are some big question marks, however. At 36, Mayweather has to prove Father Time isn’t knocking at his door. While he’s shown no signs of slowing in recent fights, there aren’t any to point to in the last year—a year that also saw Mayweather spend two months behind bars.
What’s at Stake?
The most obvious answer is Money’s spotless record. At 43-0, Mayweather’s biggest motivation at this point in his career shouldn’t be any different than it was from the onset: winning every fight.
That particular aspect won’t change, but there’s no denying the pressure on Mayweather to remain undefeated until his retirement. There’s no shortage of up-and-coming challengers looking to make their mark on the sport by taking down the undefeated pound-for-pound kingpin.
Guerrero, on the other hand, enters this fight with extremely low expectations and almost no pressure. His 31-1-1 record won’t look any worse with a loss from Mayweather added to it, but taking Money down for the first time is something every fighter at 147 pounds is dreaming of. The reward far outweighs the risk.
The King Lives on
To take nothing away from Guerrero, he’s not exactly in a good position to win this fight. Mayweather may be 26 and coming off a one-year layoff, but he’s still the best fighter on the planet until someone can prove otherwise.
Money’s speed, defensive prowess and boxing intelligence are unmatched by anyone in the sport. Guerrero won’t go down without a fight, but he’ll likely go down in this fight.
Given Guerrero’s aggressive style and tendency to leave himself open to calculated counterpunches, there’s a good chance Mayweather takes full advantage of some Guerrero mistakes and walks away with a comfortable victory by unanimous decision.
