When Floyd “Money” Mayweather (44-0) defeated Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-2-1) on May 4, the undefeated champion proved not only that he was still the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world, but that he also needs more competition.
Mayweather and his team will be working to decide whom he will fight in his scheduled September bout, but ultimately it must be British bruiser Amir Khan.
There has been plenty of speculation about whom Money would fight next, and Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer told MLive.com that Khan was on a list of possible opponents, along with Danny Garcia and Victor Ortiz.
Khan is the perfect choice in and out of the ring.
Outside the ring, Mayweather’s next fight must come against a marquee fighter that can help draw pay-per-view ratings. While Robert Guerrero had a great backstory and his family was interesting, he didn’t have the hardcore following like Khan.
Khan is a huge star in England, and despite two tough losses in his last four fights—defeated by Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia—the boxing sensation is a mainstream name in the country.
If he were to face Mayweather, it would be a truly international battle.
Mayweather’s team has already claimed the undefeated champion would like to fight in the U.K. (h/t Dan Rafael of ESPN), and the idea of taking on the home-town hero on his turf would be a draw unto itself.
Whether this fight were to take place in England or in Las Vegas—the latter is much more likely—the ability of Money and his team of promoters to make this a must-see spectacle would result in this fight being the kind of main event that is fitting of the Mayweather name.
While the undefeated champion is known for his trash talk, it was Khan that threw the first stones in this war of words:
As great as the build to this superfight would be outside the ring, it would be a compelling battle inside the ring as well.
Mayweather has faced criticism over the last few years about his lack of excitement in the ring, and his fight against Guerrero was a perfect example of the defensive and slow style that most fans don’t want to pay to see.
Khan would not allow Mayweather the opportunity to give the fans a boring fight against him, as his style calls for a very aggressive attack with plenty of movement and heavy shots. That aggressive style is what Mayweather used to be known for, but now it will be used against him.
The speed and power of Khan will be more explosive than Guerrero’s, but Khan has proven that he leaves openings that can be capitalized on. Mayweather lives on making opponents pay for their mistakes, and that should entice the undefeated champion to risk it all against Khan.
This potential fight would likely end in a knockout or technical knockout if Khan were to stay aggressive throughout the fight. Whether it’s Khan or Mayweather that is KO’d would be the biggest question of the build to this potential bout.
