Everyone loves a good drama behind a main event title bout. Floyd Mayweather vs. Robert Guerrero has its share of interesting storylines heading into Saturday night’s clash.
Mayweather’s promotional prowess is the key to his success. That’s especially true in the current fighting landscape that is becoming slowly overrun by the popularity of Mixed Martial Arts.
We’d all like to see Mayweather finally square off against Manny Pacquiao, but there are plenty of reasons this title defense will be worth its price of admission.
As the fight draws nearer, let’s take a closer look at a few of these compelling storylines.
Jail Time for Both Competitors
Mayweather’s long layoff from the ring has been a well-documented journey for boxing’s pound-for-pound king. However, his last fight, a successful title defense against Miguel Cotto in May 2012, was a walk in the park.
Things have changed since then, though. Mayweather spent two months in jail after being charged with misdemeanor domestic battery last year.
Guerrero took a shot at Mayweather for serving that jail sentence in protective custody. He slammed the champ for doing his time “with the snitches.”
Like Mayweather leading up to the fight, Guerrero might be on his way to a prison cell after its conclusion. He is facing up to four years in prison for attempting to carry an unloaded pistol and three magazines onto a plane in New York. Remember, New York is one of the most stringent states in terms of gun penalties.
Mayweather has questioned the lack of judgment and attention paid to Guerrero’s situation in comparison to his impending sentence last summer leading up to the Cotto fight.
Two Completely Different Personas
Guerrero is a tough and gritty middle-American who hails from a low-key city in California. He doesn’t draw the publicity or anywhere even close to the attention that Mayweather has come to expect during his rise to the top of the boxing world.
On the other hand, Mayweather is flashy and has a huge public presence. He has utilized his personality and success in the ring to garner unequaled levels of wealth and notoriety.
We’ve been waiting for that success to overcome the product we see in the ring, but it hasn’t happened. Is the hard-working and heavy-handed Guerrero the fighter to finally transcend the unbeatable facade of Mayweather?
Is Mayweather Losing a Step?
Mayweather, 36, isn’t getting any younger as he attempts to add even more accolades to his flawless professional career. He can’t continue this forever, so questions have begun to arise as to whether or not we will begin to see a decline in his dominance.
Don’t write him off just yet, but every fighter eventually sees his skills diminish. It’s only a matter of time until Money finally hears a decision in his opponent's favor.
